John Stanser (Jack) Rich
     John Stanser Rich was commonly known as Jack. He was born on 10 October 1895 in St Leonards, New South Wales. He was the son of George Edward Rich KCMG, PC and Elizabeth Steer Bowker. John Stanser Rich was educated from 1906 to 1913. At Tudor House, Mossvale & Sydney Grammar. He was in Form I in 1906 and in Form VI in 1913.
     John Stanser Rich and Elizabeth Steer Bowker travelled to Naples, Italy, in 1914 per the "SS Otranto". They departed 25 February 1914.
     He served in the Kings Liverpool Regiment,as 2nd Lieutenant in 1915. He travelled to Europe in February 1914 with his mother & sister. When war broke out he volunteered for service. Went to Aldershot and was commissioned. Attached to 3rd battalion King's Liverpool Regiment from August. He had obtained a commission in the Australian 26th Regt. previously. He was hospitalized in Rouen (2nd British Red Cross Hospital) March 1915. See the book: The King's Regiment (Liverpool) 1914-1919 by Edward Wyrall for details..
     John died on 17 May 1915 in Festubert, France, aged 19. S L Morris of the 4th King's Regt on 13 March 1918 from France sent the following citation which was written by his commanding officer: For gallantry and devotion to duty on the 16th and 17th May 1915 at Richebourg in leading his platoon across "no man's land" under very heavy fire and subsequently in a further attack on the Ferme Cour D'Avoue on the 17th, when his platoon was ordered to withdraw form a difficult position, by his coolness and ability he was able to effect this with success and with very few casualties. Lieut J S Rich was exceptionally brave on this occasion running great personal risks to ensure the safety of his men. He was killed almost at the moment when the operation was concluded. His death is recorded on the Memorial at the east end of Le Touret Military Cemetery. A picture of John Stanser Rich painted from a photograph by Frances Hodgkins in early 1916, was commissioned by his father and is now held by GAA Hooper.

     Jonas died. He possibly died in the Americas. A Jonas Rich was a soldier born in Massachusetts as the head of a family in the 1750s, this seems too old for this Jonas, but he may have had a son in America called Jonas.

All their messauges, lands, etc. at Woodend, parish of Penistone, being copyhold lands of the manor of Penistone which they promise to surrender in the manor court before 15 December for 106 pounds.

Jonas Rich was mentioned as tenant in the manor court rolls dated on 30 June 1692 in Penistone, YKS, Copy surrender and admittance: Court Manor of Penistone of Sir Godfrey Bosville . It was presented that Francis Broadbent of Wortley and Maria his wife and John Tyas of Welhill and Margaret his wife had surendered part of a messauge called Woodend ... at Cubley Woodside to the use of Jonas Rich of Pond who made fine 3/7 and was admitted.

Witnessed by George Walker of Hunshelf and Wiliam Nevinson? of Wortley, gent. William Fenton of Underbank and Godfrey Boseville, clerk to the said William Fenton. The mark of Jonas Rich. Registered 17 August 1705.      
Jonas Rich In 1707 and 1712 he paid £1/9/9 and £1/9/4 for land at Hunshelf and may be the Jonas Rich also paid land tax of £1/1/5 for property at Thurlstone between 1707 and 1712 in Hunshelf, Penistone, Yorkshire.

They left lands to their nephew Jonas then Amor, sons of Daniel Rich, and mentioned his nephew John. He was mentioned as a deceased tenant in the manorial rolls dated 15 November 1714, in Penistone, YKS, Copy surrender: Court of Sir William Boseville, Manor of Penistone. It was presented that Jonas Rich, lately deceased, surendered on 13 March last, to Sir Godfrey Boseville lately deceased then lord of the manor of Peniston, a messuage called Woodend with several closes and lands to such uses as would be revealed in his will. It was also presented that the said Jonas Rich had by will dated 23 March last left the premises to the use of Sarah Rich his wife for her life and after her death to the use of Amor Rich.
