On 2 May 1744 Richard Popplewell signed a document re the fire at Haxey in February which mentioned Humphrey Popplewell, widower with 3 children, owner and occupier of buildings worth £125 lost in fire at Haxey on 28 Feb 1744 along with many others.
In the manor of Epworth deeds dated 30 Nov 1744 there is mention of lands to Richard Popplewell, of Temple Belwood, esquire. Richard, was granted property in a deed dated 13 November 1745. Indenture between (1) Benjamin Coy of Belton, carpenter (2) Humphrey Poplewell of Belton, yeoman & Catherine his wife (3) Richard Popplewell of Epworth, gent. Sale by the Coys in consideration of £8 by Humphrey to Richard Poplewell of one and half roods of land arable in Belton.
Deposited in Lincolnshire Archives is a plan drawn about 1750 of "Mr Fairbanks Particular and Measurement of the whole estate of Mr Popplewell" (in Belton, Beltoft and Mosswood).
Richard died on 16 April 1752 in Belton in Axholme, Lincolnshire, aged 62. In the north chancel there is a memorial: Here lies the body of Richard Popplewell, esq. late of Temple Belwood, who departed this life April 16 1752, in the 64th year of his age. He was second son of Robert Popplewell, late of Temple Belwood aforesaid, by Katherine his wife, one of the daughters of Robert Ryther, esq. of Belton. The said Richard was Sheriff of the county of Lincoln in the year 1739, and by Elizabeth his wife, one of the daughters of John Smith, of Newland, near Wakefield, in the couty of York, which said Elizabeth died at Wakefield, ye 22nd of Oct. 1751 aged 56, and was buried in Wakefield church. He had three children, Robert, Katherine, and Elilzabeth. He was buried on 19 April 1752 in Belton.
Stonehouse, 1838, states that this man was a very strange character, and as hot-headed and perverse in his own way as the mother who bore him.

Richard Popplewell and his wife Sara Ann kept the Green tree Inn at Messingham from the late 1800's to 1905. I spent a lot of time there as an infant. My mother, Beatrice Annie Sleddon, came from Liverpool when she was about 18 years old to help her grandmother at the Green Tree. It was here that she met Henry Cheeseman whom she married in 1900.
Richard Popplewell retired from innkeeping about 1905 and had a new house built in Wells St, Messingham, He had several small holdings in the Isle of Axholme where he was born and where his relatives originated. He had three daughters, Rebecca, Selena and Claretta Octavia. All three girls were sent to a boarding school in Bakewell, Derbyshire.
Richard Popplewell did not live at the Wells St. House for very long as Sara Ann died in 1909, At the funeral, a smart woman from Hull whom Richard had known in his younger days persuaded him to sell up and take all his possessions to Hull where she is reported to have kept a small antiques shop. It is at this point that the family fortunes were lost.
At that time., two of the Popplewell daughters were already dead and one lived in Ireland, so there was nobody to restrain Richard. He lived in Hull with the woman for a few years.
In the meantime, by 1914/15 my mother and father and three children had come to live at a house on Ashby Road which Beatrice had bought from Henry Jackson, the father of Doctor Harry Jackson. One night a disillusioned Richard knocked at the door of his grand-daughter and informed that he had come to stay. He later died in that house.
Beatrice Annie, his grand-daughter inherited a small holding in Belton and some run down cottages in Messingham.
Richard Popplewell could not read or write (NOTE:This I doubt, as he was well able to sign his own name on his marriage certificate in the Messingham Register. JPD) - all the bookkeeping was done by Sara Ann. They were very successful in all their business ventures,

Robert Popplewell received a letter dated 1687. Richard Clarke to his cousin Robert Popplewell re a tenant, John Hallifax.
Of Epworth then Sandtoft & Temple Belwood. In 1691 he was "solicitor" to the Isle Commoners. According to Stonehouse, 1883, Stovin states that Robert Popplewell was the last person who held the office of solicitor to the Isle Commoners. He was the son of David Popplewell, yeoman, and from a small estate of about fourteen pounds per annum, raised an estate of about four or five hundred a year. He had no education but what he obtained at a common country school. Indeed he was the land stewart to her Grace the Countess of Granville, and by that most of the tenants of the Manor of Epworth lay under one obligation or other to him; and I am of opinion this was the true reason of his being chosen solicitor. This gentleman had all the Islonians bound, and which they had reason to repent and their posterity after them: for he taxed them at his pleasure, and beside he enclosed what common ground he pleased, under a pretence to raise money to carry on the cause, but never was that I can hear of accountable for the rents and profits thereof. Stonehouse, 1838, states that in the minutes of the Court of Sewers, he was fined fifty pounds for his abuse and reproachful words to the Court, and to Mr Thomas Raven, one of the Commissioners, during the sitting of the court. It was the custom of this singular character, whenever a pedlar called at his house, to purchase his whole stock-in-trade, as well as the beast of burden which carried it. The animal was turned loose to spend the remainder of his days on the North Moor; the pedlar was entertained for the night, and after having been crammed full of meat and drink as ever his panniers had been with goods, he was locked up in his chamber till the morning. The inventory of this gentleman's live and dead stock, taken at the sale which took place after his death, was a very curious document. The late WPB Johnson, esq. of Temple, told the author of this work, that he had seen it; and he sought for it diligently among the family papers, but was unable to find it.

Of Epworth then Sandtoft & Temple Belwood. In 1691 he was "solicitor" to the Isle Commoners. According to Stonehouse, 1883, Stovin states that Robert Popplewell was the last person who held the office of solicitor to the Isle Commoners. He was the son of David Popplewell, yeoman, and from a small estate of about fourteen pounds per annum, raised an estate of about four or five hundred a year. He had no education but what he obtained at a common country school.
