Rachel and Jack met when his work took him to Romford and about this time he was called to Lowestoft where his mother lived as neighbours were complaining that she was behaving strangely. He moved her to his Romford house where she helped with looking after his daughter Joyce. His son Gerald was being cared for by his mother's relatives.

     John died on 29 April 1945 in 'The Wrenches', Dedham, Essex, England, aged 49. "A popular and efficent official of Tendring Rural District Council since 1934, Mr John William Wood Fordham, the council's fincance and rating officer, died at his home "The Wrenches" Dedham on Sunday after bing ill for some time. Mr Fordham Came to the Tendring Council after experience with a number of other local authorities in Essex and other appointments in Kent, and he undertook the responsible task of organised the council's financial departments when it first became a separate unit, the offices of the council then being situated at Harwich. During the war he had been Food Executive Officer for the rural district, a task to which he brought his usual pleasant and businesslike methods. Mr Fordham was held in high esteem by members of the council, by his fellow officials and the members of the council's staff. He formerly resided at Dovercourt.".

His first was Margaret Forratt (d 1653), of a Scots family, and widow of colonel and ambassador baron James Spens (Jakob), 1st Friherre of Orreholmen, who had died 1632, and been in Swedish service. Friherrinna Margaret had two sons of her first marriage (major, baron Axel Spens of Orreholmen, 1626-56, and colonel, baron Jakob Spens of Orreholmen, 1627-65), who thus became Hugh's stepsons. In his first marriage, lord Hugh had one surviving child, a daughter baroness Bridget Margaret Hamilton af Deserf, who in 1659 married baron Kustaa Adolf Skytte of Tuutarhovi.
He married secondly a lady whose name was Jacomina.
     Margaret died in 1653.

     Edmund subsequently married Blanche daughter of Robert Count of Artois and widow of Henry King of Navarre and had issue. Aveline de Fortibus was born circa 1251 in England. She had 15 years minority as the ward of Richard de Clare, Earl of Gloucester. She was described as 18 in 1269, 21 in 1272.. She was the daughter of William de Fortibus Count of Aumale and Isabel de Redvers Countess of Aumale.
Aveline de Fortibus married Edmund Earl of Lancaster in April 1269.
     Aveline died in 1274 or 1279. She predeceased her mother and left no issue.

He became lord of Harewood in 1240, 7th Earl of Devonshire (succeeding his grandfather in 1217).. He was born circa 1220 in England. During his minority the King committed the manor of Harewood to Walter Grey, Archbishop of York.. He was the son of William de Fortibus and Aveline de Montfitchet.
William de Fortibus Count of Aumale married Isabel de Redvers Countess of Aumale, daughter of Baldwin de Redvers and Amicia de Clare, circa 1241. He married three times. First Devorgilla daughter of ... who died without issue; secondly Constance or Christiana, daughter of Alan, Lord of Gallaway (who died 1234) died without issue, thirdly Isabel, daughter of Baldwin Rivers, Earl of Devonshire.
Isabel married William de Fors or de Fortibus, Earl of Albemarle. The correct modern spelling of this name is Aumale, a place situated on the river Brele in Normandy. The Latin form is Alba Marla or Aumalcum. In the 13th century it was called in France Aubemarle or Albemalle. [Oxf Rec Soc V XIV intro].
     William died in 1260 in Amiens, France. He died 40/44 Hen III and was buried at Meaux Abbey 1240! The two Williams are obviously mixed up here, check the sources again.
Roger Hovenden says "he was buried in Thornton Abbey in Lincolnshire which he founded in 1139. in 29 Ed II 1356 [sic], he had a grant for a fair at Pocklington.
