     Ninian Dunbar was the son of William Dunbar and Elizabeth Sinclair.
     Ninian died on 23 June 1636 in Forres, Moray. Upon the 23rd June, Alexander Dunbar of Kilbyack and his accomplices, slew Robert & Niinan Dunbars and hurt James Dunbar, all three brethren in Forres, and ran away without reparation. It is said that their sister with a timber stoup slew one called Mercer, wife to Alexander Dunbar of Braks, who was at the slaughter of her brethren, and she and they were all buried togester in the kirk of Alves. The slain gentlemen were sons to umquhile Alexander Dumbar of Hempriggs, and all friends together..

     Patrick Dunbar was born before 1470? In Scotland. Shaw lists him as the 7th child as listed in the Dunbar aisle of Elgin Cathedral and states "Unfortunately the upper part of the wall, on which the names were cut, has disappeared". He was described as the sixth son by Burke, but he is not listed in the 2003 edition. He was the son of Sir Alexander Dunbar and Isobel Sutherland.
     Patrick matriculated at St Andrews University in 1484. He is possibly the Patrick Dunbar who matriculated at St Andrews in 1484. Patrick was appointed Chancellor of Moray in March 1487. Patrick was Chancellor of Caithness after 13 August 1497. Aug 13 1497: Presentation to M. Patrick Dunbar of the chancellory of Cathanis quhen it sal happin to vak be resignation or dimission of schir Wilzam Tarall, now possessor thereof perteneyn to the Kingis gift, the sege vacand, etc. The Chancellor of the diocese, along with other functions, had a general charge of theological and grammar education. He was very indignant at any extra-mural interloping or unauthorized teaching in his jurisdiction. Any free-trade in teaching was put down by him with proper spirit. It was his duty to superintend the service in church, and, amongst other parts of it, the preaching. He and the treasurer kept the chapter seal under double locks. 1512 - Accounts by Andrew Stewart, Bishop of Caithness: Cathenensis - Et de vj xiij s iiij d, in completam solutionem contributionis Magistri Patricii Dunbar pro concellaria Cathenensi. Patrick was Chancellor of Aberdeen diocese, rector of Kilmure, founded the house of Bennagefield. Like his brother Gavin he resisted the marriage decrees. [Kilconzie p.50] between 1521 and 1525.

     Patrick and George Dunbar were educated from 7 April 1574. Gift to Patrick Dunbar, lawful son of George Dunbar of Avach for his support "at the scole" for 7 years, of the chaplainry of Drimmen, situate in the chapell of Sanct Boneface. Patrick Dunbar was mentioned in a deed dated 4 February 1580/81 in Avoch, Ross & Cromarty. 4 Feb 1580/81 Halieruidhous: Precept for a charter of confirmation on a feu charter, dated 23 July 1563, by the deceased Mr William Sinclair, parson of Olrik... for the feuing of the lands of his bishopric, with consent of the dean and chapter of Ross, to George Dunbar and the heirs male of his body, whom failing to George Dunbar, his natural son, and the heirs male of his body, whom failing to Patrick Dunbar, brother german of the said George, younger, and the heirs male of this body, whom failing to the lawful heirs male whomsoever of the said George, elder, of three quarters of the town and lands of Avach, with the mill, multures and sequels, excepting the mill lands occupied by Mr Alexander McKainze, with the 'yair' and salmon fishing 'si invenire contigerit', and also the 'wrak wair' and all woods and groves growing within the bounds of the said town and mill, the brewhouse of Avach and the lands thereof, occupied the said George, in the diocese of Ross and sheriffdom of Inverness; to be held of the said archbishop [sic] and his successors. xlvii, 142r.
     Patrick was a plaintiff in a civil court case on 8 February 1588/89. Letters purchased at the instance of Patrick Dunbar, son to George Dunbar of Awauch, against George Dunbar parson of Kilmure, and John Cuming in the chanonry of Ross the said Patrick having the gift of the escheat moveable goods and effects which pertained to the deceased John Wilsoun indweller in the chanonry of Ross, who was denounced rebell and put to the horn, for delivery of the said escheat effects by the said George Dunbar and the said John Cuming to the said pursuer. Decreet given against the defenders.

1590 9 March departit in ye Channorie of Ross ane weill conditionit zoung man callit Patrik Dunbar son and appeirand air to George Dunbar of Awache. Mr George's 1563 charter of Avoch gave the succession to his 'natural sons' George and Patrick. They were the sons of Jonet Thomson, to whom their father gave a liferent of the manse of Kilmuir in chanonry, with succession to her three sons George, Patrick and John . Jonet was later called Mr George's wife (R.M.S., v, 1920, 11 June 1591). Patrick had a chaplainry grant, 7 April 1574 (R.S.S., vi, 2439). Like his elder brother George, he predeceased his father)..
     Patrick died on 15 August 1596 in Avoch, Ross & Cromarty. He predeceased his father (1607), so may the Patrick of Bennethfield, parish of Avach & sheriffdom of Inverness, whose will was proved 17 August 1596.

      Patrick appears to have inherited his mother's property of the Hirsel, and he also held, either through her or from his father, the lands of Greenlaw, as he was patron of the church there, and also of the churches of Lamden and Haliburton.' He refers to his wife in a charter to the monks of Kelso, but her name has not been definitely ascertained, though the Liber Vitae seems to imply she was Cecilia Fraser. He had at least one son William, usually designed son of Patrick, who inherited Greenlaw. He married a lady, styled M. the Countess, but her identity has not been discovered. He is also said have married his second cousin, Ada, daughter of his cousin Patrick, Earl of Dunbar, though the marriage could not have taken place before 1225, and to have received with her the lands of Home but the evidence is not wholly conclusive.
A Patrick the clerk appears as 'son of the Earl' in a writ to the Abbey of Kelso, in which Gospatric is the only Earl named, but no other reference to him has been found.

     Patrick Dunbar was also known as Patrick Dunbar (of Beil) in records. He was born in Scotland. He is called the third son. He was the son of Sir Patrick Dunbar and Isabella Randolph.
Sir Patrick Dunbar of 'Bele' or Biel who appears as brother of George, Earl of March, in 1387-88.7 In or before 1390 he received from his brother Earl George 40 merks of land in the territory of Mersington, including a considerable portion of the parish of Eccles. He was made prisoner at Homildon, 14 September 1402. He occurs in charters of 1423 and 1425, as 'uncle' of George, eleventh Earl of March. He was one of the envoys to arrange for the ransom of King James I and he appears as a commissioner for the Marches down to 12 July 1429. His wife, in 1434, was Euphemia Stewart, daughter of David, Earl of Strathearn, and widow of Patrick Graham of Dundaff. He was alive in 1438.He had issue at least two sons, Patrick and George, and is supposed to have been the ancestor of William Dunbar the poet.

There is an entry in the "Register of the Privy Seal of Scotland", recording the legitimation of Robert Dunbar, and John Dunbar, brothers of Patrick Dunbar, Baron of Sanquhar, natural sons of Alexander, prior of Pluscarden. (The reference to Sanquhar indicates that the Prior must have made over these lands near Forres to his eldest son before 1547). The following year a precept of sasine was drawn up. On 24 June it was signed by Alexander & 12 monks. This document made over extensive lands within the barony of Fochabers, which belonged formerly to Urquhart Priory, to Alexander Innes of Cromy (Crombie) who married Beatrix Dunbar, reputed to have been one of the Prior's daughters.

In the event of John Dunbar having no heirs, the property was to pass to another brother Alexander, who failing, Patrick, or in the event of the death of all of these, to their cousin, David Dunbar of Bennethfield. Patrick, John & Alexander were all natural sons of the Prior. Robert (who may have been dead by 1560) and John were legitimated on 12 Feb 1547/8.

Sir Patrick, succeeded his father before 1424, when he was Lord of Cumnock, and was one of the hostages for King James i. He apparently deceased before 1437, when his son Sir John was lord of Cumnock and Mochrum. Sir John had two sons, Patrick and Cuthbert. Patrick of Cumnock had three daughters:
a. Euphemia, married, before 21 June 1474, to Sir James Dunbar, eldest son of Sir Alexander Dunbar, first of Westfield. (See title Moray.)
b. Margaret, married before same date to Sir John Dunbar, second son of Sir Alexander, and from her the present Sir William Cospatrick Dunbar of Mochrum-park is descended in the female line.
c. Jonet, married to Patrick Dunbar of Kilconquhar. (See infra, under George, eleventh Earl of March.) 4 Sir John's second son Cuthbert, who had Blantyre, is now represented In the female line by Captain Nugent Dunbar of Machermore, co. Kirkcudbright.

     Patrick Dunbar was born before 1483 in Mochrum, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He was the son of Sir John Dunbar and Margaret Dunbar (Dunbar).
Patrick Dunbar married Margaret Vaus before 1502. She was the daughter of Patrick Vause of Barnbarroch, by whom he had an only daughter, Margaret.
Appointment by George Bishop of Galloway of Patrick Dunbar son of John Dunbar of Mochrum and Margaret Vaus his spouse and their heirs, as castellans and Keepers of the palace and fortalice of Balnespyk at the Church of Candida Casa, granting to them the 100/- lands of Balnespik of oldextent and the 6 merklands of Balchure in the barony of Quhitherne; rendering, besides the duties of their office, 27 merks yearly.
     Patrick resided at Clugston, Penninghame, Wigtownshire, from 1508. He obtained lands of Clugston (parish of Penninghame) in 1508, by charter under the Great Seal.
     Patrick died on 9 September 1513 in Flodden, Northumberland, England.
