Upon the 23rd June, Alexander Dunbar of Kilbyack and his accomplices, slew Robert & Niinan Dunbars and hurt James Dunbar, all three brethren in Forres, and ran away without reparation. It is said that their sister with a timber stoup slew one called Mercer, wife to Alexander Dunbar of Braks, who was at the slaughter of her brethren, and she and they were all buried togester in the kirk of Alves. The slain gentlemen were sons to umquhile Alexander Dumbar of Hempriggs, and all friends together..

     Patrick was a plaintiff in a civil court case on 8 February 1588/89. Letters purchased at the instance of Patrick Dunbar, son to George Dunbar of Awauch, against George Dunbar parson of Kilmure, and John Cuming in the chanonry of Ross the said Patrick having the gift of the escheat moveable goods and effects which pertained to the deceased John Wilsoun indweller in the chanonry of Ross, who was denounced rebell and put to the horn, for delivery of the said escheat effects by the said George Dunbar and the said John Cuming to the said pursuer. 1590 9 March departit in ye Channorie of Ross ane weill conditionit zoung man callit Patrik Dunbar son and appeirand air to George Dunbar of Awache. Mr George's 1563 charter of Avoch gave the succession to his 'natural sons' George and Patrick. They were the sons of Jonet Thomson, to whom their father gave a liferent of the manse of Kilmuir in chanonry, with succession to her three sons George, Patrick and John .       Patrick appears to have inherited his mother's property of the Hirsel, and he also held, either through her or from his father, the lands of Greenlaw, as he was patron of the church there, and also of the churches of Lamden and Haliburton.' He refers to his wife in a charter to the monks of Kelso, but her name has not been definitely ascertained, though the Liber Vitae seems to imply she was Cecilia Fraser. He had at least one son William, usually designed son of Patrick, who inherited Greenlaw. He married a lady, styled M. the Countess, but her identity has not been discovered. He is also said have married his second cousin, Ada, daughter of his cousin Patrick, Earl of Dunbar, though the marriage could not have taken place before 1225, and to have received with her the lands of Home but the evidence is not wholly conclusive.
A Patrick the clerk appears as 'son of the Earl' in a writ to the Abbey of Kelso, in which Gospatric is the only Earl named, but no other reference to him has been found.

There is an entry in the "Register of the Privy Seal of Scotland", recording the legitimation of Robert Dunbar, and John Dunbar, brothers of Patrick Dunbar, Baron of Sanquhar, natural sons of Alexander, prior of Pluscarden. (The reference to Sanquhar indicates that the Prior must have made over these lands near Forres to his eldest son before 1547). The following year a precept of sasine was drawn up. On 24 June it was signed by Alexander & 12 monks. This document made over extensive lands within the barony of Fochabers, which belonged formerly to Urquhart Priory, to Alexander Innes of Cromy (Crombie) who married Beatrix Dunbar, reputed to have been one of the Prior's daughters.
