Robert Templeton was born in 1802 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland. He was the son of John Templeton (1766-1825)a famous botanist who developed the gardens at Cranmore, near Malone, just south of Belfast and his wife Katherine Johnston (~1773-1868).
Mike Stewart wrote: John Templeton (1766-1825) and Katherine Johnston (~1773-1868) had 4 daughters and a son: Robert 1802-1892: Born in Belfast, ed at BAI which his father John had helped found. 1821-31 studied medicine at Edinburgh U. and was an active Entymologist, accumulating his own collection of insects and contributing significantly to entymological, meteorological, and botanical research being carried out by the Belfast Natural History Society. From 1829 he began to meticulously prepare his father's ms for publication. 1833 appointed in Ordnance Medical Department of the Royal Artillery as Assistant surgeon which took him to Mauritius and Ceylon, where he again conducted original and comprehensive research into flora and fauna. He was recalled to Europe in 1852 and served in the Crimean War, where he was promoted to Surgeon-major in 1855. Retired with Honorary rank of Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals in 1860. He succeeded to the Baronetcy at the decease of his father 1740. From Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn derived the present Sir Watkins Williams-Wynn, 10th Bart..
