     James Sutherland 5th Lord Duffus was born on 8 June 1747. He was the son of Eric Sutherland 4th Lord of Duffus and Elizabeth Dunbar.
     He was restored to Peerage honours 1826. His estate was settled on his cousin Benjamin.
     James died on 30 January 1827 aged 79.

     Janet Sutherland was born in Scotland. The elder daughter of the 7th earl of Sutherland, Lady Jane married Sir James [sic] Dunbar of Cumnock, and was the mother of Gawin Dunbar, bishop of Aberdeen. The younger daughter was the wife of Seton of Meldrum. The widowed countess and her son, Earl John, disagreeing, he demolished her house and tower of Helmsdale which had been built by her. She retired to Easter Garty, and as a protection married Alexander Dunbar, the brother of her daughter's husband. Alexander Dunbar was killed by Alexander Sutherland of Dilred, who was executed and forfeited for the crime. She was the daughter of John Sutherland 7th Earl of Sutherland and Margaret Baillie.
     Janet Sutherland married Alexander Dunbar, son of Sir Alexander Dunbar and Isobel Sutherland, in October 1480.

     John Sutherland was born in 1346. He was the son of William Sutherland 5th Earl of Sutherland and Margaret Bruce Countess of Sutherland.
     John died of the plague circa September 1361 in Lincoln. He had been kept hostage there by the English as a token for his uncle's good behaviour.

     John Sutherland 8th Earl of Sutherland was the son of John Sutherland 7th Earl of Sutherland.
     His father resigned the Earldom in his favour 22 Feb 1455/6 but he was found incapable of managing his own affairs in 1494. He married firstly Finvola (allegedly killed ina boerty just after a narrow escape from drowning while crossing the River Unes by ferry) daughter of grand daughter of Archibald Celestine Macdonald.
     John died in 1508.

     He was the second son of the fourth Earl of Sutherland and married Mary, daughter & co-heir of Reginald le Cheyne and acquired through her, the lands of Duffus. He was succeeded by his grandson Alexander. He was the ancestor of the Sutherlands of Duffus (see Dunbar of Hempriggs).

     William Sutherland 5th Earl of Sutherland married Margaret Bruce Countess of Sutherland, daughter of Robert, the Bruce, King of Scotland and Elizabeth de Burgh, in 1345. They married between 3 August & 29 September, she was the sister of David II.
     William Sutherland 5th Earl of Sutherland married secondly Joanna Menteith before 9 November 1347. He was her fourth husband and they had two other sons- kenneth & William. She was the daughter of Sir John Menteith of Rusky and the widow of Malise, 7th Earl of Strathearn.
     William died on 19 June 1371. He fought at the Neville's Cross 17 Oct 1346.
