     William Steer was christened on 23 November 1651 in Edensor, Derbyshire. He was the son of Robert Steer and Mary Trippet.
William Steer was apprenticed to Thomas Trippett between 1668 and 1673 in Wadsley, Yorkshire. Wadsley was a lower grade cutlery centre according to David Hey. William was a cutler and chapman from 1673, Darnall, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Hunter described him as a cutler of Sheffield. Gentleman of Darnall 1690. Son of Robert Steare of Edensor, Derbyshire, corviser. Apprenticed to Thomas & William Trippett cutlers of Wadsley for 5 years 1668, then to Thomas Tooker. Gained his Freedom in 1673. Acquired good property. His brother George was apprenticed to him in 1681. He was called a hardware chapman at his burial.
     William Steer married Sarah Ludlam, daughter of George Ludlam, on 13 March 1674/75 in St Peter's, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Note that a William Steare married Elizabeth Dyson at Wath upon Dearne 12 June 1673..
     William Steer was mentioned in the will of George Ludlam dated 28 August 1677.

     John Wingfield of Haslebrough (Derbys.) and John Eyre of Sheffield manor, gentlemen, to William Steere of Darnow, cutler. A parcel of land lately divided into 2 closes called Fawkners Wood, abutting on the R. Rother and Barley close nearby (tenants: Barbara widow of John Ardron of Treeton and William Burrowes of Treeton, clerk, late Onispherus Austwick). For £400. (Mentions Isabel wife of John Eyre). The area is between Treeton, Aston and Orgreave.
     William Steer was mentioned in a deed dated 1721 in Ecclesfield, Yorkshire. Bundle of deeds and manorial copies re a property at Ecclesfield, Yorks., sold to William Steer by Mary Bayley in 1721.
     William Steer made a will dated 27 August 1725 in Darnall, Sheffield. In the name of God Amen, I William Steer of Darnall in the parish of Sheffield and county of York, chapman, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following ... all my estates both real and personal with the payment of my just debts, legacies and funeral expenses
All my messuages lands and tenements whatsoever lying in the several parishes of Sheffield Rotherham Aston and Hansworth als Handsworth in the county of York I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Sarah Steer for and during the term of her natural life if she continues a widow in my name I also give and bequeath unto my loving wife all my ready money and all my mortgage bonds in bills and other securities whatsoever and all my personal estate whatsoever if she continues a widow in my .... but if she marries then I will that my several children hereafter mentioned to whom I devise the several parts of my real estate shall immediately after her marriage enter upon the several shares and parts of my real estate to them hereby devised and receive and take the rents and profits of the same to their own use and benefit And I also will if my said wife shall marry she shall be accountable to my children for all my personal estate that she shall have possessed herself of and after her marriage I give and devise all my personal estate whatsoever to my eight children William George Joseph John Benjamin Charles Elizabeth the wife of Edmund Swift of Darnall and Ann the wife of William Binks of Darnall to be equally divided among them
And whereas in 1706 I purchased of the most noble Thomas Duke of Norfolk the first and next presentation and nomination and free disposition to the rectory of parochial church of Hansworth als Handsworth when the same should first and next happen to be vacant now I do herby give and devise the same to unto my said loving wife upon this trust and consideration that she present my son Charles to the same when it shall happen to be vacant or if my son Charles should die before the said rectory happens to be vacant then that she present to the same when it shall happen to be vacant my grandson William Steer son of my eldest son William Steer of Ecclesfield in the county of York, clerk, or such one of my grandchildren are at that time when a vacancy shall happen shall be capable of taking the said presentation but I give my said loving wife full power and authority with the consent of my son Charles to dispose of the said dispensation in what manner my said son Charles and she shall think fit for his benefit and advantage.
I give to my said eight children five pounds a piece to buy them mourning my dwelling house at Darnall together with the orchard and croft thereunto belonging... and the close called the Lock Close lying at Darnall afsd and a piece of land abutting upon the place called .... in Darnall afsd containing 34 yards thereabouts in length and about 14 yards in breadth now in the occupation of Benjamin Hoyland I give and devise and bequeath after the death or second marriage of my wife unto my eldest son William Steer afsd his heirs and assigns for ever and also all my lands called the Falcons or Falconers Wood lying the parish of Aston afsd now held ... for 10 years by John Brinsworth of Staley als Stavely in the county of Derby, butcher I give .. to my said son William his heirs and assigns for ever the close called the Wear Close lying in the parish of Aston afsd near the said lands called the Falconers containing 5 acres
I give ... to my son Joseph Steer of Sheffield, mercer, 200 pounds the close called the Mill Close containing 3 acres and the close called Chappel Bank containing one acre in Aston afsd

my son John shall have receive and take to his own use the profits of the coal pits that are now wrought in the closes called High Hassells in Rotherham and shall have full liberty to sink pits and get coal in any part of the closes called High Haswell and shall have free leave for passage of Horses and carriages to the same thought the farm called Savage Bushes lying in the parish of Handsworth afsd ... and those five closes called High Hassell lying in the parish of Rotherham and the farm called Savage Bushes in the parish of Handsworth which I hold in lease from Thomas Duke of Norfolk
I give to my daughter Ann wife of William Binks of Darnall the dwelling house at Darnall he now lives in for and during the term of her natural life and after her decease I give and devise the same to Steer Binks son of the said William and Ann Binks his heirs and assigns for ever ... but I will that during his minority the rents received by his father William Binks to him the said William Binks own use and benefit ...
I desire my son William Steer to be aiding and assisting to his mother in the performing of this my will ... to be kind to such of my children as have had the least portion from me in my lifetime and of this my last will and testament ... my said wife my sole executrix I now put my hand 27 August 1725. He was buried on 15 August 1726 in Attercliffe chapel, St Peter's, Sheffield.
     William died circa 15 August 1726 in probably at Darnall, Sheffield, England. Another source gives 26th.

     William Steer was christened on 16 August 1722 in St Peter's, Sheffield, Yorkshire. William, son of Joseph Steare, mercer. He was the son of Joseph Steer and Maria Morewood.
     William Steer married Ann Rastall on 18 May 1744 in Easton on the Hill, Northamptonshire. William Steeer of Newark upon Trent, Notts, gent and surgeon & Anne Rastall, lady of the manor of Burton, daughte rof Samuel Rastall of Newark, gent and Anne his wife who was daughter of Anne Dickenson late lady of the manor. Married at Easton juxta Stamford 10? May 1744.
     His gave consent to his daughter Frances' marriage to Richard Rider Popplelwell Steer at Crumwell, Ntt in 1780.

He mentions his wife Ann, his late brothers Charles & William Steer, his late father Joseph Steer, all his sons and his daughter Frances, his grandchildren Robert Popplewell Steer & Frances Steer (children of Frances), his sons Charles & William Steer to be joint executors. He added a codicil to his will on 4 January 1793 in Northamton. This is a codicil to be added to and taken as part ofthe last will and testament of me William Steer late of Aldermanbury but now of Northampton in the county of Northampton ...mentions his wife Ann and son Charles. He added a codicil to his will on 4 January 1793. His second codicil mentions his daughter Jane Hunt.
     William died in February 1797 in Northampton, Northamptonshire, aged 74.
     His will was proved on 22 March 1797 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.
     The antiquarian, Joseph Hunter wrote: He was a silkman of London, afterwards of Northampton. Died Feb 1815. Had a very large family, 2 sons & 7 daughters. Mrs Lowe of Locks, Mrs Andrews, Mrs Cole, Mrs R R Steer [Frances], Mrs Deane (Denne), Mrs Hunt. The sons in the next generation went to India.

     A William Steer was a glazier of Wakefield in the 1807 poll for Yorkshire.
     William Steer made a will dated 20 July 1815.
     William died on 10 October 1819 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, aged 65. He was buried after 10 October 1819 in Sandal Magna, Yorkshire.
