Charles William Steer was born on 15 December 1750 in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire. He was the son of William Steer and Ann Rastall. Charles William Steer was christened on 26 December 1750 in Burton Latimer.
Charles William Steer lived at Bradfield, St Anne, Jamaica.
William Highley wrote: The Steer family seemed to have settled in Jamaica in the middle of the 18th century. Col. Charles of Trafalgar Plantation married the eldest daughter of William Ewbank Esq. a wealthy plantation owner. Col. Charles had a younger sister called Sarah Cole Steer born 1789 and a daughter Sarah Melmoth Steer born 1803. The Cole name is especially interesting as you may remember Benjamin Cole who married Harriet Steer is mentioned in the wills of Charles Steer of Basinghall Street who died in 1784 and also in the will of Charles Steer (husband of Mary Wood of Jamaica) of Devonshire Sq. who died in 1810.
The Steer family seemed to acquire Bradfield plantation by the marriage of Col. Charles Steer to Miss Ewbank eldest daughter of William Ewbank Esq. He originally owned it. William Ewbank's family originally came from Yorkshire. William's wife's first name was Ann but no more is known about her.
On the 1851 census of Wiltshire there was a pupil Charles William Steer at Marlborough College aged 16 born Jamaica 1835. He is the son of John Thomas Steer of Bradfield and Trafalgar Plantation and Grandson of Col. Charles Steer. Charles William was born in St Ann. By 1878 he had inherited Bradfield Plantation & leasing and managing others. He died in 1896.
Your article, the relevant bit I have copied below, is very interesting. I knew Charles William Steer married Mary Wood of Jamaica but did not know that he had resided at Bradfield in St Ann. Who was Mary Wood the daughter of and was Elizabeth Alice Conran of Jamaica daughter of Charles William and Mary Wood? I had no knowledge of Charles and Mary having a daughter Elizabeth. If so presumably she married a Conran. All the other children I have recorded were born in Spitalfields, Christ Church, Stepney, London. There must be some close connection somewhere between Charles William Steer who married Mary Wood and Col. Charles Steer who married Miss Ewbank
.
Charles William Steer married Mary Wood on 10 October 1782 in St George Hanover Square, Westminster, Middlesex, England. Charles William Steer of Devonshire Square, London married Mary Wood of Jamaica, daughter of ... and had Elizabeth Alice Conran of Jamaica JNL pedigree of Conran. Pallot's marriage index states: Charles Steer (of Christ Church) & Mary Wood (minor) with consent of her father William Wood, by licence, St George Hanover Square. An unknown person resided in Devonshire Square, in London.
Charles William Steer lived at Church Street, London.
Charles William Steer made a will dated 2 August 1810 in London. This is the last will and testament of me Charles Steer of Devonshire Square in the City of London esquire ... I give to my dear wife Mary Steer ... my beloved Mother, brother William Steer and my sister in law his wife, his son Charles William Steer, ... his two younger sons William Henry & George John
he mentions his six children Harriott, Sophia, Frances, William Henry, George John & Ann who are minors, his son-in-law James Vine, son William Frederick who had already cost his father for his improper conduct, and his son Charles William.
Charles died before 4 October 1810.
