6th seigneur of Aubigny, 1st Duke of Lennox, only son of John Stuart/Stewart
5th seigneur, youngest son of John Stewart 3rd or 11th Earl of Lennox [q.v.] by his wife Anne de la Quelle. [Scots peerage]. Created Duke of Lennox by King James VI. He was brought up in France but went to Scotland in Sep 1579. On 5 March 1579/80 he was created Earl of Lennox, and 5 Aug 1581 Duke of Lennox. [Cokayne].

Esme Stuart
James VI loathed violence and was very insecure. In fact, he wore heavily padded clothing most of his life as a method of protecting himself from being stabbed. After the raid at Stirling, he found a friend and protector, Esme Stuart, whom he made Duke of Lennox. Esme had spent most of his life in France and was educated and sophisticated. Morton had given James a certain amount of power and as his confidence grew, Morton could no longer control him. Morton was accused by James Stewart of being in on the plot to kill Darnley and James did nothing to protect Morton who was executed.

It is believed that the relationship between Lennox and James was a homosexual one. It was Lennox who put forth the idea to James of the divine right of Kings, that he was above the people and the Church, whereas Knox and the Presbyterians thought that the King should rule Scotland for God and be an ordinary member of the Kirk.

. Esme Stewart Duke of Lennox was born circa 1543. He was the son of John Stuart Lord of Aubigny and Anne de la Queuille.
Esme Stewart Duke of Lennox married Catherine de Balsac, daughter of William de Balsac, in 1572.

Euphemia Stewart was also known as Christian or Euphemia Brus in some records. This descent has now been disproved. She was born before 1200. Burke states that she was the daughter of Walter, 3rd High Steward of Scotland; but she had the manor of Birkynside, co. Lauderdale as her maritagium [SP III:256, cites Registrum de Dryburgh, 84, 85[12] ]
~ identification as Euphemia de Brus (correction of account in SP which shows her as a daughter of Walter le Stewart) by Andrew B. W. MacEwen[10]
She was previously thought to have been possibly a 2nd wife, as Patrick, 7th Earl of Dunbar was b. say 1213 (SP III:257), evidently older than Alexander le Stewart, supposed brother of Euphemia[12] - now disproved. She was the daughter of Walter Stewart 3rd High Steward and Lady Beatrix Angus.
Euphemia Stewart married Patrick Dunbar 5/6th Earl, son of Patrick Dunbar 4th Earl of Dunbar and Ada, of Scotland,, circa 1213. He married Euphemia, daughter of Walter, the third High Steward of Scotland, with whom he received the estate of Birkynside, in Lauderdale, which he burdened with a merk of silver to be paid yearly for the benefit of the church of Dryburgh. The Countess survived her husband, dying perhaps in or about 1267. From the chronicler of Lanercost, who tells a somewhat decorated anecdote of the strained relations between her and her eldest son, we learn she resided, in her later years, at Whittinghame, in East Lothian. The same writer also states that he was present when mother and son were reconciled at her deathbed, he asking her forgiveness. Cokayne's corrigenda refutes this and makes his wife his stepsister.
Euphemia Stewart lived at Whittingham, East Lothian, Scotland, after 1248. Euphemia de Brus, widow of the Earl of Dunbar, confirmed a grant after 1248.
     Euphemia died circa 1267.
