Gervas Stanser
(10 January 1630 - before 19 March 1693/94)
The name Stanser and its variations may be derived from Stancill, a township in the parish of Tickhill in the West Riding of Yorkshire which had a population of 66 in 1831. In 1822 it was 2 farm houses, 2 miles from Tickhill. It was united with Wellingley and Wilsic to form a township with a population of 54.
In the 1379 Subsidy Rolls (Poll Tax), The vill of Stancil (villate de Stransall) in Tickhill parish (Tickhill Wapentake) listed Mergareta de Stransall, and the villa de Tykhill listed Johannes de Stansale & Agnes uxor ejus; Johanna Stansall; Johannes de Stansall & Cristiana uxor ejus, Spicer.
The registers of Thorpe Salvin are extant from 1592, but their marriage is the first Stanser (and variants) entry. Note that Gervase, etc. is a very popular name in Thorpe Salvin.
Another possible ancestor of his may be Robte Stanshall who lived at Stoney Streete Nottingham in the parish of St Mary's according to the 1589-1590 churchwarden's rate book [Notts Archives CA 4611-5].. Gervas Stanser was christened on 10 January 1630 in Staveley?, Derbyshire, England. Gervas son of John Stansall and Elizabeth. All the early Stanser families originate around the East Midlands/South Yorkshire area of England:

A possible match is found at Staveley, Derbyshire: Gervas son of John Stansall and Elizabeth was christened 10 Jan 1630. There is no death in the parish for a Gervas, nor a suitable entry for John or Elizabeth which supports the idea that they moved. A John Stansall of Stavely married Elizabeth Kay of Stavely 14 February 1614. The owners of the manor of Stavely were the Frechevilles, who included a Gervas, a likely source of the name.
Gervas Stanser married Grace Unknown (Stanser) on 2 July 1669 in Thorpe Salvin, Yorkshire. Jervies Stansa & Grace his wife were married. Gervas was a labourer, in Thorpe Salvin. M2.
Gervas Stanser was mentioned in the 1672 hearth tax list in Thorpe Salvin. A Jarvas Stawell [sic] had 2 hearths. This could easily be a mistranscription of Stansell.
An Elizabeth Stanser was buried at Throapham on 11 Sep 1688 (possibly his mother?).
Gervas died before 19 March 1693/94 in Thorpe Salvin, Yorkshire. He was buried on 19 March 1693/94 in Thorpe Salvin. An inventory of his estate was dated on 13 June 1694 June 13 1694 [sic]: A true inventory of all goods & chattells of Gervase Stanshall of Thorpe Salvin lately deceased....
The administration of his estate was granted in April 1695 in Laughton en le Morthen, Yorkshire. .... Administration of ... Gervase Stanshall, late of Thorpe Salvin...
