     Mrs Sarah Smith and Mrs Hannah Smith are mentioned on a tablet in Wakefield church, in a long list of contributors towards repairing the vicarage house there in 1769, when they each subscribed five guineas.
     Sarah Smith made a will dated 26 September 1772. ... and also I give to my niece Miss Ann Denton the sume thirty pounds upon trust that she shall and do at her own costs and charges, as soon as conveniently may be after the end of a calendar months next after my decease, lay out the same in the purchase of freehold lands, tenements, hereditaments, in the W Riding of Yorkshire and convey and settle ... unto the schoolmaster for the time being of the school lately built by my late brother John Smith, Esquire, deceased, situate... in Greenside for ever ... The will also names her nephews John Sylvester Smith of Newland, William Serjeantson of Wakefield, esq. and William Smith of Methley; her nieces Miss Mary Serjeantson, Miss Sarah Smith, Mary Torr, wife of Nicholas Torr of Pontefract, Alice Trant of Himsworth, Sarah Brown of Sheffield, Catharine wife of Allen Johnson of Wakefield, Elizabeth wife of Robert Steer of Sandtoft, co. Lincoln, Mary & Elizabeth Denton of Wakefield and Elizabeth Halliday. To the charity school of Wakefield 20 pounds, to the York County Hospital 20 pounds, etc. etc.
     Sarah died on 8 January 1775 at Wakefield, Yorkshire. She was buried on 11 January 1775 at Wakefield. With Priscilla Smith & Frances Serjeantson the iron plate memorial states in the quire of the cathedral: Sacred to the memory of Mrs Sarah Smith who died January 8 MCDDLXXV [1775]. A gentlewoman who's piety was unaffected who's bounty was extensive, who's benevolence was universal and who's example was highly worthy of imitation.
