     John Bland served in the military in the 85th Regiment of Foot as a soldier between 1795 and 1800. He is not included in WO97 soldiers documents, the documents being lost. The Regimental registers state: Jno Bland, aged 25, 6 years service, was wounded in the left leg in Holland, of St James, Bury St Edmunds, discharged to pension 8 Dec 1800. A note states Prayed increase 88100.
Certificates of service: 85th Regt of Foot 1 Battalion whereof Major General Nugent is Colonel. John Bland in Capt Mackenzies Company of the afsd regiment. Born in the parish of St James in or near BSE co. Suffolk, aged 25 years and by trade a labourer has served honestly and faithfully in the said regiment for 6 years: but by a wound received in the left leg the 2 Oct 1799 on the late expedition to Holland is hereby discharged and humbly recommended as a proper object of this His Majesty's Royal bounty of Chelsea Hospital. He having first received all just demands of pay, clothing, etc. from his entry into the said regiment, to the date of this discharge, as appears by his receipt on the back hereof. Given under my hand, and the seal of the Regiment at London this 15th day November 1800. Reverse: the mark of John Bland. Cover: John Bland aged 25, served 6 1/8? years, wounded in the leg in Holland, St Jas BSE Suffolk, a labourer.

Ditto: Capt Robt Ainslie's company: Privates - William Bland 31 days, £1/11/-. Remarks: on duty. Ditto following month; ditto but sick for the 28 days from 25 Feb to 24 March, £1/8/-; April, £1/11/-; 25 Apr - 24 May now called John Bland, list headed by "On command with Lt Col. Ross at Farsham] names bracketed with "Det" (=detached?); 25 Aug-Sep John Bland is in Capt Pigott's co.- quartered at Bridgnorth; by June-July 1799 he is back in Capt Ainslie's company as John earning £1/8/4 for 30 days with the note "on board ship from 25 to 27 June; July-Aug he is paid £1/2/6 in Cpt McKenzie's co. with 2/4/- extra allowances to innkeepers, etc. on bd ship; Aug-Sep ditto 1/9/-, on board ship 25-28 Aug; Sep-Oct 1/10/- for 30 days "sick in general hospital"; ditto Oct-Dec, (a large number of men deserted in Nov-Dec). Capt John McKenzie's company - no Bland listed. (ditto following month).

He was apparently stationed in Jersey in the Channel Isles after his marriage (1799) as his eldest daughter claimed to be born there in there in the census returns.
Pension returns Ipswich WO 22/38 June 1847: Pensions ceased by death, 85th Regt. Rate of pension 6d, Date of admission to out pension 8 Dec 1800, Pte., Permanent pension, ceased 1 June 1847 John Bland, aged at decease: 72.
     John Bland married Mary Metcalf, daughter of James Metcalf and Isabella Mothersole, on 5 December 1796 in St James, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
