It is possible that there could be two Williams, father and son, as he was in his late 60s when he fathered children by the second marriage. However, the Mary Hamlyn's death followed by a marriage implies the same man.

Tracing his ancestry is proving difficult as there are 110 missing parishes including Widecombe in the 1674 Devon Hearth Tax. At Tavistock there is a Christopher Ruby with 2 hearths, and a John Ruby with 1 hearth, both chargeable. Paupers who were not chargeable were are Mary Rubey and Richard Rubey, each with one hearth.
In the 1647 assessment there is no Ruby family in the parish of Widecombe (Haytor Hundred - parts missing), but a John Rooby assessed in Tavistock parish "John Rooby for chauntry land 1s".
The 1641 Protestation Returns list a John Rubye at Buckland Monachorum; a Christopher Rubye at Plymouth; Christopher and two Thomas Rubies at Tavistock and a John, Walter and William Ruby at Tavistock.
The earliest Ruby mentioned in Devon is John Roby of Tavistock in the 1332 Lay subsidy. The next mention in Devon is for a John Robye of Tavistock and a John Robye of Plymouth in the 1581 subsidy (assessment dated 22 Aug 1582). However relevant records for the intervening period are missing for the likely areas. William Ruby was born before 1675 in Devon, England. There was a William Ruby in the neighbouring parish of Ashburton having children between 1682 and 1691. He was buried there 3 Sep 1716 (attested Margerit Williams); also a William Ruby buried there 7 Aug 1726 (Willm Rubby, son-in-law to Christo Williams attested Joan Williams).
