The 1860 NZ government gazette published a list of 22 people licenced to act as Customs House Agents at the port of Auckland for the ending 31 Dec 1860 which included Edward Rich, Queen-street wharf, Auckland.

Edward died of apoplexy on 27 January 1879 in Baker Street, Auckland, New Zealand, aged 72. His death certificate described him as aged 75, born in Ewell Yorkshire (sic), a Customs House agent and he had one male and one female living issue. He had been 36 years in the colony.
The New Zealand Herald listed a death notice: On Jan 27, Mr Edward Rich. The funeral will leave his late residence Baker Street, 3 o'clock this day. Friends please accept this invitation.
There is no record of probate in New Zealand. He was buried on 30 January 1879 in Symonds Street cemetery, Auckland. The Anglican Sexton's list has Edward & Mrs Rich at Block K 135 and K 136. The St Paul's register has Edward Rich buried 30 January 1879 aged 75 years of Baker Street.

Edward Rich was born before 1535 in Penistone, Yorkshire. He was the son of William Rich and Ann? Unknown.
Edward Rich married Elizabeth Turton, daughter of Richard Turton, circa 18 May 1555. Edward signed a marriage settlement on 18 May 1555 in Penistone, Yorkshire. Richard Turton of Pykering agrees to convey to William Ritche of Bullowes (in consideration of a marriage between Edward Ritche, his son and heir and Elizabeth Turton, daughter and heir of Richard), manor, lands etc. of Richard or of Thomas his father in Thurleston and they agree to settle on the married pair 2 messuages and mylnes called the Mylnhouses and a yearly rent of 13/4 from certain lands in Thurlestone and 2 messuages called Smalshay after the death of Elizabeth the mother of Richard Turton.
Edward Rich married Alice Unknown in Penistone, YKS. Edward's will mentions his wife Alice according to the College of Arms, but I cannot find her name in the document.There is no evidence to date for the mother of his children. Could Alise be Elise? An Alis Rych had a son Mychell Rych baptised on 29 September 1583 at Mexborough, Yorkshire.
Edward Rich was mentioned in a deed dated 8 September 1576 in Penistone, YKS. Arbitration: Edward Rich of Boulas, Raffe Marsden of Carlcote, John Ebotson of Haselhede and Rauffe Bastoke of the Wodhede abitrators in the dispute concerning a gate Crossegate in Carlecotes.... On 19 October 1583 William Rich and Edward Rich leased property in Smallshaw, Penistone. Lease: William Rich of Bulhous amd Edward Rich his son and heir to John Gledell of Smallshawe. 1/3 part of a messuage called Smallshawe in Thurlestone, parish of Penistone for 40 shillings a year for 20 years.
Edward Rich of Bullhouse in the parish of Peniston, co. York, 30 Elizabeth (1587). [Hunter, Harleian v.37, p.41]. He was executor of his father's will in 1598/9.

He was a pikeman of Thurleston: Musters taken of the Privat men & town soldiers within the wapentake of Staincross at Barnsleye, 13 Dec 1587 by Richard Wortleye and George Woodroff, Esquiers: Thurlstone - Privat Men: P Edwarde Riche, F. Thurlstone sent a strong detachment to the muster at Barnsley Dec 4 1587, at the alarm of the Spanish invasion.
During Michaelmas term, 1596 Edward Rich purchased property during Michaelmas term, 1596. Land in Hunshelf & Bradfield by a fine. Edward Riche & Edward Barber, plaintiffs v. Francis Greaves & Dionisia his wife, John Greaves & Elizabeth his wife, re seven messuages & a fulling mill with lands in Huntshelf , Snowdenhill (Snowden Mill) & Bradfeilde. Edward Rich and Richard Rich was mentioned in the marriage settlement for Amor Rich and Alice Burdett dated 24 July 1598. Post nuptial settlement: William Riche of Bollows in Thurlestone to Francis Greave of Hunshelf and William Hinchcliff of Bilcliff, in consideration of the marriage already solemnised between Aymer Riche (one of the sons of Edward Riche son and heir of the said William) and Alice Burdett (one of the daughters of Henry Burdett of Walton), the manor of Smallshaie and capital messuage called Smallshaie and appurtenances in Smallshaie, Thurlestone & Thurlestone meare and the capital messuage called Roide and the capital messuage called Milnehowse and fulling mill and one water corn mill in Thurlestone with a yearly rent of 13/- out of several lands in Thurlestone (all lately purchased of Richard Turton of Pickeringe) and the capital messuage called Bollowes with lands, etc. and a water corn mill at Bollows in order that a fine may be levied, settling the estate on William, Edward and Aymer Riche in succession, with reversion to Richard Riche, brother of Aymer, in default of issue, also it is agreed that a settlement may be made on Alice of the Smallshaie and Milnhouse property for her jointure. Edward Rich was mentioned in a conveyance of property on 24 July 1598. By feoffment:Adaimer Riche of Milnehouse in Thurleston, one of the sons of Edward Rich of Bollowes to Richard Rich, his brother. Messuage called Raynowe in Thurlestone and Thurlestone Meare with reversion to the grantor.

In the name of god Amen: I Edward Rich of the Bulhouse in the township of Thurleston and County of York being of perfect memory make this my last will and testament this sixth of August the first year of our soveraigne Lord James by the grace of god of England Scotland France & Ireland king defender of the faith etc AD 160-. First I commend my soul into the hands of god trusting assuredly to be saved by the redemption of Christ Jesus & my body to be buried in the parish church of Peniston And for my worldly goods I will they be disposed in maner & form following viz:
First I give & bequeath to Richard Riche my son one great arke in the lower chamber and a yoke of black oxen, and a yoke of stottes.

Note that his other son Amor is not a beneficiary of the will, presumably because he is the heir of his grandfather.

Edward's will mentions his wife Alice according to the College of Arms, but I cannot find her name in the document.There is no evidence to date for the mother of his children. Could Alise be Elise? An Alis Rych had a son Mychell Rych baptised on 29 September 1583 at Mexborough, Yorkshire.

Arbitration: Edward Rich of Boulas, Raffe Marsden of Carlcote, John Ebotson of Haselhede and Rauffe Bastoke of the Wodhede abitrators in the dispute concerning a gate Crossegate in Carlecotes.... On 19 October 1583 William Rich and Edward Rich leased property in Smallshaw, Penistone. Lease: William Rich of Bulhous amd Edward Rich his son and heir to John Gledell of Smallshawe. 1/3 part of a messuage called Smallshawe in Thurlestone, parish of Penistone for 40 shillings a year for 20 years.

Edward Rich was born circa 1590? In Penistone, Yorkshire. Probably the Edward, eldest son of Aymor, who was deceased with adult children when mentioned in Aymor's will of 1652.. He was the son of Amor Rich and Alice Burdett.

He was possibly the Edward Rich of Thurlstone who was married to Mary and had a dispute with John Goddard between June 1641 and Jan 1641/2 which went to the West Riding Quarter Sessions [Y.A.S. Record series v.54 p.298,330]. But if so, cannot be the Edward Rich of Thurleston Meare whose estate was administered 3 Jan 1637/8 by Richard Hatfield.
