Robert Popplewell married Catherine Ryther, daughter of Robert Ryther and Margaret Campion, on 24 February 1686/87 in Epworth, Lincolnshire.
Of Epworth then Sandtoft & Temple Belwood. In 1691 he was "solicitor" to the Isle Commoners. According to Stonehouse, 1883, Stovin states that Robert Popplewell was the last person who held the office of solicitor to the Isle Commoners. He was the son of David Popplewell, yeoman, and from a small estate of about fourteen pounds per annum, raised an estate of about four or five hundred a year. He had no education but what he obtained at a common country school. Indeed he was the land stewart to her Grace the Countess of Granville, and by that most of the tenants of the Manor of Epworth lay under one obligation or other to him; and I am of opinion this was the true reason of his being chosen solicitor. This gentleman had all the Islonians bound, and which they had reason to repent and their posterity after them: for he taxed them at his pleasure, and beside he enclosed what common ground he pleased, under a pretence to raise money to carry on the cause, but never was that I can hear of accountable for the rents and profits thereof. The Isle cause and his pocket were the two great gulphs that swallowed all that, and many estates of substantial yeomen in the Island, as the Kinmans, Foxes, Halifaxes, Barnards, Nodel, Tankersley, Wakefield, etc. etc. He and his affidavit men attended Westminster-Hall almost every term for a great number of years, and were as well known as an Irish evidence. He took in lands to support these men near Hirst Priory, called Affidavit Closes to this day. I can remember Belton West Carr taken in by him, containing about 100 acres, which was the last ground which this worthy solicitor enclosed.

The Lincoln Archives hold bundles of deeds (27 items) relating to freehold land at Belton purchased by Robert Popplewell from Thomas Wakefield, Roger Pilsworth (of Epworth), William Pettinger, Richard Kynman, Robert Temperton and others from 1678 to 1720; also deeds (11 items) relating to lands in Belton purchased by Robert Popplewell from Richard Kynman (Belton), Robert Rither (Doncaster) and Edmund Wildbore (Belton), 1679-89 [2TGH 1/34/1/2-3].

Stonehouse, 1838, states that in the minutes of the Court of Sewers, he was fined fifty pounds for his abuse and reproachful words to the Court, and to Mr Thomas Raven, one of the Commissioners, during the sitting of the court. It was the custom of this singular character, whenever a pedlar called at his house, to purchase his whole stock-in-trade, as well as the beast of burden which carried it. The animal was turned loose to spend the remainder of his days on the North Moor; the pedlar was entertained for the night, and after having been crammed full of meat and drink as ever his panniers had been with goods, he was locked up in his chamber till the morning. The inventory of this gentleman's live and dead stock, taken at the sale which took place after his death, was a very curious document. The late WPB Johnson, esq. of Temple, told the author of this work, that he had seen it; and he sought for it diligently among the family papers, but was unable to find it.

Nathaniel Reading owned Sandtoft (dying there 1712) then passed it to his sons. Robert Popplewell acquired it before his death in 1720. See History of the Isle of Axholme.

Robert Popplewell

Robert Popplewell was christened on 29 May 1598 in Belton, Lincolnshire. He was described as 3rd son in his father's will & minor. He was the son of James Popplewell and Elizabeth Broughton.
In James Popplewell's will dated 3 July 1605 in Belton, Robert Popplewell was named as heir; His will mentions his eldest son John (a minor), Thomas 2nd son, Robert 3rd son and William 4th son and daughters Elizabeth, Dorothea & Ann, his wife Elizabeth, his mother Alice Foster and his sister Rayner, probably the wife of Christopher Rayner, one of the supervisors. He also mentions Robert & Alban Popplewell from whom he purchased lands in Belton & Owston, & Robert Popplewell of Humberthwaite from whom he purchased lands, A Robert Popplewell witnessed the will. Joy Lloyd wrote: James Popplewell's preamble contained a statement on the nature of the Trinity and a decidedly Calvinist conclusion. Unlike the Glews, he was not alienated from the parish church at the time and expressed a wish to be buried within the church of Belton. He also left money 'towards the buying of a booke to the use of the church', as well as a legacy for the poor. His request for a sermon, however, did not name the parish clergyman John Melton, but simply left 3s 4d 'to that man which shall preach at my buriall'. James Popplewell seems to have conformed sufficiently to remain in good standing with the church, but to have been less than enthusiastic in his support for the curate.
In the name of God Amen the third day of July in the year of our lord God 1605, and in the third year of the reign of our most gracious and dread sovereign Lord James the kinges majesty that now is, I James Poplewell of Belton in the Isle of Axholm & County of Lincoln yeoman sick in body but of good and perfect remembrance (thanks be given unto almighty god) do ordain Constitute and make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following

Children of Robert Popplewell (of Misson, son of Francis)

Robert Popplewell (of Misson, son of Robert)

(26 November 1659 - )
He is not mentioned with his presumed siblings in the will of George of Flixborough in 1668.. Robert Popplewell (of Misson, son of Robert) was christened on 26 November 1659 in Misson, Nottinghamshire. He was the son of Robert Popplewell (Gent, Misson, son of Francis) and Alice Unknown.

Robert Popplewell (phantom?)

(before 1616? - before 12 November 1659)
George Popplewell of Flixborough in 1668 mentions his nephew George, son of Robert Popplewell of Misson. However I think this is is his grand nephew.. Robert Popplewell (phantom?) was also known as Robert? Popplewell in records. He was born before 1616? In Misson, Nottinghamshire, England. He is not mentioned in his presumed father's will. He is possibly confused with Robert the son of Francis, grandson of Robert.. He was the son of Robert Popplewell (of Misson, son of Francis).
Robert died before 12 November 1659 in Misson, Nottinghamshire. Robert, the father of Dorothy & Elizabeth was described as deceased in the 1675 will of Margaret of Gainsborough, widow of George Poplewell of Flixborough. It is not clear whether he is alive in George's will of 1668 but he is mentioned as the father of George's nephew George and nieces Dorothy & Elizabeth. There is only a George at Misson in the 1674 Hearth tax. He was buried on 12 November 1659? In Misson, NTT, ENG.

Robert Popplewell (son of Humphrey)

(13 May 1720 - )

(before 1539 - )
He may be the Robert who died before or on 29 June 1615 - see Ward papers at PRO: 7/51/49 & 7/54/95. However he is unlikely to have a son who was a minor.. Robert Popplewell (son of William) was also known as Robert Popplewell in records. He was born before 1539 in Belton, Lincolnshire. He was the son of William Popplewell and (?) Unknown.
