     He was mentioned in his mother's will, 1670, churchwarden at Belton in 1680.. James Popplewell was christened on 26 June 1646 in Belton, Lincolnshire. He was the son of David Popplewell (son of David, of Belton) and Jane Brewer.
     In David Popplewell (son of David, of Belton)'s will dated 16 January 1658/59 in Belton, James Popplewell was named as heir; His will mentions his brother Humfrey Popplewell, children David, Thomas, James, Robert & Ann & daughter Isabel Coggan; grandchildren John Coggan, David Popplewell & John Popplewell. James Robert & Ann were minors.
In the name of God Amen the sixteenth day of January in the year of our Lord 1658 I David Popplewell of Belton in the Isle of Axholm & county of Lincoln yeoman being weak in body but of good and perfect remembrance thanks be given to Almightie God do here by make & ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following
First and principally I do give and bequeath my soul into the hands of Almightie God my merciful father which first did give it unto me & my bodie to the earth to be buried in Christian burial at the discretion of my friends And for the worldly Estate that god hath bestowed upon me that it may be settled after my decease according to my mind I do bequeath it as followeth
First I do give & bequeath unto David Popplewell my son one three rood of land arrable lying on Miccarah hill between the Grounds of Michael Monckton Esquire on the East part and Henry Foster on the west part one three rood of land arrable lying in the park field betwixt Thomas Glew on the west and the heirs of Francis Popplewell on the east and one rood lying near Beltoft Cross betwixt the ground of Richard Elmer on the east & the ground of the heirs of Lawrence Metcalfe on the west to him the said David - Popplewell his heirs and assigns for ever to enter into at the end of two years next after my decease And I give to the said David Popplewell my son five shillings in full of his portion out of my Estate
Also I do give unto Thomas Popplewell my son one Close commonly called Great Moonfeild containing by estimation twenty acres be it more or less as it lyeth between the ground of me the said David Popplewell on the west the Comon laine on the east abutting upon the laine called the tread lane towards the north with the appurtenances to him the said Thomas Popplewell his heirs & assigns for ever to enter upon the first day of May which shall be in the year of our ­ 1661
Also I do give to James Popplewell my son cottage house in which Jarvase Fletcher now dwelleth the buildings to the same belonging and two sellions land arrable to the same belonging & adjoining containing one acre be they more or less three se[lions] of land arable lying together neare Close croft c[ont] =inge one acre one rood and a halfe bee they more or less they ly between the said Cloe croft on the west & Humfrey Popplewell gentleman on the East one three roods lying on ­ between the lands of the heyres of Thomas Tur- East and west parts and the Reedings towards the north sellions lying on hanging furlonge containing one acre & rood next the ground of the said Humfrey Popplewell gentleman on the West and the heyres of Francis Glew on the three sellions lying together near Belwood feild containing one acre be they more or less between the land of ­ Ryther gentleman on the south and Robert Maultley on the one rood lying on Sare backs between the Land of Caister on the East and [blank] on the west rood lying there between the land of John Newton on & William Harrison on the south ten sellions of Land Lyeing together comonly called maidendall flat conteyni[ng] Acres be they more or less abutting upon maidendal towards the South and hanging furlong towards the - two Sellions of land arrable containing one acre & a hal[f] lying on the furlong called Miccarah/Macarah hill between the L- Johosophat Tayler on the West & the heyres of John on the east halfe an acre lying there between the land the said Humfrey Popplewell on the East and west p[ar]t Sellions lying there containing two Acres & three rood[s] they more or lesse between the land of John Gl the west and Michael Mouckton/Monckton Esquire on the east Cottage house and three selions of land arrable lying ­ near Clonslaine / Clouslaine yate containing two acres & three roods more or less between the highway on the East and David the younger on the west abutting upon the Stump Cross mear towards the North four Acres and a halfe be it more or less lying in a ... called long Bellwood as it abutteth upon the Ground of the said Humfrey Popplewell towards the north & the comon feild towards the South one close comonly called the three acre close lying next the clottilaine on the south east and the close of John Glew on the northwest and southwest and one orchard which I call my new orchard with the croft to the same belonging & adjoining containing one acre as it lyeth between the copyhold land of me the said David Popplewell on the west & the heirs of Francis Popplewell on the east to him the said James Popplewell his heirs & assigns for ever after such time as he shall accomplish his age of one & twenty years
Also I do give to Robert Popplewell my son one messuage house in which Thomas Popplewell now dwelleth with the Barne stable beast house & other the buildings to the same belonging And three selions of land arable to the same adjoining containing one acre and a Rood be they more or less one selion of land arable and two butts lying over Greengate containing one acre and a half between the ground of the heyres of James Glew on the west and of Richard Kinman on the east the heirs of Alexander Isle on the east abutting upon the ground of John Popplewell towards the south one acre there between the ground of the heirs of Lawrence Metcalfe on the west and of Richard Kinman on the East one selion containing three roods lying on miccarhill between the lands of the heyres of Thomas Turr on the west & Thomas Morrison on the East one Acre and a half more or lesse lying on Guilflat between the lands of the said Humfrey Popplewell on the North & of Diverse men on the south abutting upon the ground of James Sealand towards the West one Acre lying on more lands between the Ground of the heyres of John Stephenson on the south and Mathew Kirke gentl[eman] on the north two sellions containing three roods as they ly between grounds of the said Humfrey Popplewell on the and James Maw on the south and one close called moonfeild containing seven acres be it more or [less] as it lyeth between the close called great moonf[eild] on the East and the ground of Robert Bernard o- abutting upon Clottilaine towards the north wi­ appurtenances to him the said Robert Popplell his heirs and assigns for ever after such time as shall accomplish his age of one and twenty
Also I do give and bequeath unto Anne Popplewell my daughter one toft stead and three crofts same belonging comonly called Brocks toft by estimacon three acres be they more or less between the ground of the heirs of John Thor- on the South and David Popplewell the younger on the North abutting upon the street towards east with the appurtenances to her the said Ann Popplewell her heirs and assigns for and during the term of nine hundred and ninety years to come and unexpired to enter unto at such as she shall accomplish her age of one and twenty years or marriage which shall happen be first
Also I do devise and give to my loving brother Humfrey Popplewell and to my loving friend Robert Barnard one selion of land arable meadow or pasture lying in the Low feild of Beltoft aforesaid containing half an acre [be] it more or less upon a furlong called water- lying next the ground in occupacon of Michael ... Esquire on the East and west parts abutting upon the Close of the said Humphrey Popplewell t- the north ---ne rood lyinge there between the ­ in occupacon of the said Michaell Monckton ... east and west parts and abutting upon the close of the said Humfrey Popplewell towards the north And six swathes of meadow lying in the Side Ings next the meadow of the heirs of the said John Stephenson on the south and abutting upon the ground of the said Michael Monckton towards the East to them the said Humfrey Popplewell and Robert Barnard their heirs and assigns for ever to be disposed on according to the trust by me reposed in them the said Humfrey Popplewell and and Robert Barnard
     And my will is and I do hereby devise unto Jane my loving wife all the lands and tenements which I have hereby given unto my children until such times as is expressed and set down for my said children to enter unto the same
Also I do give unto Isabell Coggan my daughter the sum of ten pounds
Also I do give unto the said Anne Popplewell my daughter the sum of sixty pounds of current English money to be paid to her when she shall accomplish her age of one and twenty years or marriage which shall happen to be first
Also I give to John Coggan my grandchild five shillings
Also I give to David Popplewell my grandchild five shillings
Also I give to John Popplewell my grandchild five shillings
All the residue of my goods cattell and chattells not given & yet unbequeathed my debts being paid and funeral expences discharges I do give and bequeath unto the said Jane my wife whom I do make & ordain sole executrix of this my last will and testament
And I appoint and desire my loving brothers Thomas Brewer gent & Richard Brewer to be supervisors thereof

     Item all the Residue and Remainder of my goods and Chattells not given & bequeathed my debtts legacyes and funeralls discharged I give --d bequeath unto Thomas Poplewell James Poplewell Robert --plewell Anne Poplewell & Tomisin Dawson my children equally to be divided amongst them

     James Popplewell married Elizabeth Medley on 12 June 1671 in Belton, Lincolnshire. James Popplewell was buried on 26 April 1689 in Belton.
     James died before 26 April 1689 in Belton, LIN. Conflicting evidence states that James Popplewell died before 10 September 1729 in Belton, LIN. He was buried on 10 September 1729 in Belton.

His will mentions his wife Jane and her son John Sleford, his son Francis and his wife Dorothy, his son David, daughters Katherine Glew (son in law William Glew, Francis Glew, son of William), Isabel Pinder, Elizabeth Thornton (& Fraunces Thornton and James Thornton sons of Richard Thornton of Belwood), Elizabeth Poplewell daughter of David Poplewell my son. Thomas Poplewell and David Poplewell, James Poplewell (under 21), sons of Willm Poplewell my son, Margaret Poplewell and Isabell Poplewell daughters of the aforesaid Willm Poplewell. He gives to the children of Robert Pynder David Poplewell Willm Glewe Richard Thornton and Christofer Fowler (daughters Katheryn Fowler and Agnes Fowler) and Willm Poplewell which appear to be his sons & sons in law.

Impremis I bequeath my soul to almighty god my only Saviour and Redeemer and my body to be buried within the church of All Hallows in the middle Alley of the said church of Belton aforesaid against my Seat where now usually I do sit.
Item I give and bequeath to the parson of the said church for tithes and oblations forgotten xij d [1 shilling]

Item I give will and bequeath to Davyd Poplewell my son one old Ryall of gold my greatest pan and all my leases that I have of Robert Evens and Roger Castilford gent two tables one cupboard two iron racks and two forms and after his decease to remain to the heirs males of his body lawfully begotten And for default of such heirs to remain to Fraunces Poplewell [sic] my son and his heirs for ever
Item whereas I have given by deeds to David Poplewell and Fraunces Poplewell my sons before named all my lands being Freehold and also all my copyhold lands by Surrender I will that all the aforesaid lands given to the aforesaid Davyd Poplewell shall remain to him and his heirs mails of his body lawfully begotten And for default of such issue the aforesaid lands remain to the aforesaid Fraunces Poplewell my son and his heirs males of his body lawfully begotten for ever and likewise I will that all the aforesaid lands given to the aforesaid Fraunces Poplewell shall remain to him and his heirs males of his body lawfully begotten And for default of such heirs males the aforesaid lands remain to the aforesaid Davyd Poplewell my son and his heirs males of his body lawfully begotten for ever And for default of such heirs males I will that all the aforesaid lands after their decreases remain to the next heirs of me the said James Poplewell for ever
Item I give will and bequeath to David Poplewell my son and to his heirs males of his body lawfully begotten all that my messuage builded with all the houses there upon the houses thereupon builded and all the lands arable meadows and closes with the appurtenances set lying and being in Beltoft and Belton aforesaid which I bought and purchased of Willm Browne Alexander Mounson [?monuson] gentilmen and of Willm Audus [compare line 11 Awdus] yeoman and for default of such heirs males of his body lawfully begotten the aforesaid messuage and all the premises remain to Fraunces Poplewell my sonne and to the heirs mails of his body lawfully begotten for ever
Item I will that if Robert Poplewell do not discharge and pay to me or to my Executors certain sum of money which he hath Mortgaged his house with all his lands and closes in the parish of Belton to me then I give will and bequeath the said house lands and closes with the appurtenances to David Poplewell and Fraunces Poplewell my sons and their heirs for ever

The Residue of all my goods and chattels not given willed nor bequeathed my debts and legacies paid and my Funeral expenses discharged I give will and bequeath them freely and wholly unto Davyd Poplewell and Fraunces Poplewell my sons whom I make my full Executors jointly together of this my present testament and last will I do ordain constitute and make Willm Broughton John Kytchyn Willm Glewe and Alexander Scott the elder of Belton aforesaid yeoman Supervisors and overseers of this my present Testament and last will And they to have their charges borne at all times in and about my business only
These being witnesses hereof that this is the very true testament and last will of me the aforesaid James Poplewell Willm Broughton / John Kytchen / Willm Glewe / Alexander Scott/ Robert Hutchenson / and John Brewer.
     James died before 17 August 1570 in Belton, Lincolnshire. He was buried on 17 August 1570 in Belton, LIN.
     His will was proved on 26 October 1570 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. This will was proved before the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury at London on the 26th day of October, in the year of our Lord 1569 by the oath of Walter Garsett in proxy for David Poplewell and Francis Poplewell executors named in this will to whom was committed the administration of all the goods of the said deceased to well etc having been sworn on the Holy Gospels.

     James Popplewell was christened on 29 August 1591 in Belton, Lincolnshire. He was the son of James Popplewell (of Beltoft, son of William) and Prudence Dobson.
     In James Popplewell (of Beltoft, son of William)'s will dated 12 June 1592 in Belton, Lincolnshire,, James Popplewell was named as heir; His will mentions his wife Prudence and his sons Francis & James, and daughter Katherine.
In the name of God Amen the 12th day of J-- in the 34th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lady Elizabeth by the grace of God of England France and Ireland Queen defender of the faith etc., 1592 I James Popplewell of Beltoft within the parish of Belton sick in body but sound in wit and of perfect remembrance God be praised, do ordain constitute and make this my last will and testament in manner and form following viz. Firstly, I bequeath my soul to Almighty God and my body to be buried within the Churchyard at Belton aforesaid
     Item I give and bequeath unto my wife one cow and one calf. Item I give and bequeath unto Prudence Popplewell my wife two of my best horse
     Item I give and bequeath unto every one of my children a cow and a calf
     Item I give and bequeath unto Francis Popplewell James Popplewell my sons either of them a horse
     Item I give and bequeath unto Katherine Popplewell my daughter an other horse
     Item I give and bequeath unto every one of my children 40 shillings.
     Item I give unto Prudence Popplewell my wife all the rest of my goods, whom I make executrix of this my last will and testament
     Item I give unto Lancelot Thornton and George Foster either of them 12 pence and their charges about my business
     Item I give unto Prudence Popplewell my wife all the years in my farm In consideration that she shall keep my children if she live so long And if it please God to call her to his mercy the years then to expire shall remain to my said children

     James Popplewell was christened on 19 April 1562 in Belton, Lincolnshire. He was mentioned in the will of Richard Popplewell, his uncle. He described himself as the son of Alice Foster in his will. He was the son of Thomas Popplewell and Alice Thornton.
     In Thomas Popplewell's will dated 8 February 1562/63 in Belton, Lincolnshire,, James Popplewell was named as heir; His will mentins his wife Alice, his two children James and Margery and his three brothers Richard, Robert, William and his son Robert. A James Popplewell was witness.
     In the name of God Amen the 8 February 1562 I Thomas Poplewell of Woodhouse in the parish of Belton in the Isle of Axholme in the county of Lincoln husbandman whole of mind good & perfect of remembrance & sick in body thanks be unto God do ordain constitute & make this my present testament & last will in manner and form here following
First I bequeath my Soul to Almighty god our lady Saint Mary and to all the celestial company in heaven and my body to be buried in the Church of All Hallowes in Belton aforesaid

     James Popplewell was mentioned in the will of Richard Popplewell dated 12 July 1564. James was a yeoman in Belton, LIN..
     James Popplewell married Elizabeth Broughton on 24 September 1583 in Belton, LIN.
     James Popplewell made a will dated 3 July 1605 in Belton. His will mentions his eldest son John (a minor), Thomas 2nd son, Robert 3rd son and William 4th son and daughters Elizabeth, Dorothea & Ann, his wife Elizabeth, his mother Alice Foster and his sister Rayner, probably the wife of Christopher Rayner, one of the supervisors. He also mentions Robert & Alban Popplewell from whom he purchased lands in Belton & Owston, & Robert Popplewell of Humberthwaite from whom he purchased lands, A Robert Popplewell witnessed the will. Joy Lloyd wrote: James Popplewell's preamble contained a statement on the nature of the Trinity and a decidedly Calvinist conclusion. Unlike the Glews, he was not alienated from the parish church at the time and expressed a wish to be buried within the church of Belton. He also left money 'towards the buying of a booke to the use of the church', as well as a legacy for the poor. His request for a sermon, however, did not name the parish clergyman John Melton, but simply left 3s 4d 'to that man which shall preach at my buriall'. James Popplewell seems to have conformed sufficiently to remain in good standing with the church, but to have been less than enthusiastic in his support for the curate.

     James Popplewell was christened on 21 December 1613 in Belton, Lincolnshire. He was the son of John Popplewell and Ann Aldus.
     In John Popplewell's will dated April 1630 in Belton, James Popplewell was named as heir; His will mentions his eldest son James, youngest son Thomas, second son John, all minors, his wife Ann (executrix) and his friends my --< Robert Poplewell, and my brother Richard Stephenson supervisors. Witnesses were Thomas Popelwell, Robert Poplewell, Richard Stevenson & Thomas Bernard.
     In the name of God Amen. I John Poplewell of Belton in the Isle of Axholme, and Countie of Lincoln, yeoman, being sick of body and perfect of remembrance, thanks be given to God: do make this my last will and testament in maner and form following. First I give my Soul to Almightie God that gave it and my body to the earth to be buried where my Executrix shall appoint

     James Popplewell married Jane Kinman on 8 December 1635 in Belton, Lincolnshire. He was a churchwarden in Belton, LIN, in 1636.      
Humphrey Popplewell and William Popplewell (son of James) were listed in the Protestation returns on 6 March 1641/42 in Belton, LIN.

All which houses & ground are holden of the Manor of East Greenwich in the Countie of ­ in Fre and common Soccage.
     Item I give to Thomas Poplewell my youngest son my house where Thomas Roodie [?] doth dwell, with the orchard & two closes to the same adjoining called litle hesle, to him and his heirs for ever which house and ground is holden of the Manor of East Greenwich aforesaid in Free Soccage.
     Item I give to John Poplewell my second son, an acre of land lying at Clack---- that I bought of John Hallyfax, two half acres of land lying on the same furlong, that I bought of George Foster, a Rod of land lying on Mapple hill, that I bought of Nevill Newton half an acre lying on Fulmere, half an acre lying on the Tofts, that I bought of Nicholas Metcalfe, four selions lying near holegate hill containing an acre that I bought of William Foster, & a furlong? lying in Norcroft, at goosepits, half an acre of land that I bought of Alexander Fletcher, lying on Norlandes, and half an acre of land lying in Norcroft that I bought of John Singleton, to him & his heirs for ever. And my will is that my wife shall have the profits thereof untill he accomplish the age of one & twenty yeares: & likewise the house & ground by me given to my son Thomas Poplewell my will is that my wife shall have the profits of the same until he shall accomplish the age of one & twenty years
