John de Muntham
(before 1360 - )
No Domesday estate or early manor was centred in Itchingfield. The parish was divided between outliers of other manors, principally Sullington, Thakeham, and Muntham in Findon. The Itchingfield portion of Muntham and most of the Itchingfield portion of Sullington became separate manors in the 14th and 17th century respectively, and other reputed manors appeared in the late Middle Ages. Then or later the manors of Denne in Warnham, (Footnote 78) Pinkhurst (in Slinfold), Thakeham, Sullington, and Wiston, and perhaps Broadbridge (in Sullington) and Warminghurst, still had tenements in Itchingfield. (Footnote 79)
In 1895 it was stated that no manorial rights remained in the parish. (Footnote 80)
The manor of Muntham included lands in Itchingfield and Findon, and its early descent has been treated elsewhere. (Footnote 81) The Itchingfield portion, like that in Findon, was held of Thakeham manor, to which quitrent was payable until 1887 or later. (Footnote 82) ... The house and 23 a. became Muntham House School for maladjusted children. (Footnote 96)
The mansion house of Muntham was mentioned in 1602 or 1603. (Footnote 97) A 17th-century timber-framed wing with two jettied gables survived until the 19th century. The rest of the house was rebuilt in 1742 in brick, with a six-bayed asymmetrical front and chimneys on the gable ends. In 1880 P. S. Godman pulled down the old house and built a new one of three storeys, in brick with stone dressings and Tudor in style. (Footnote 98). John de Muntham was also known as Mundham in some records.
Various inhabitants of Findon surnamed Muntham are recorded in the 13th and early 14th centuries. (Footnote 42) In the mid 14th century the manor was divided in two, the Itchingfield portion descending in the Marlott family. (Footnote 43) In 1372 Thomas son of John of Muntham quitclaimed the Findon portion to Thomas Cornwallis of London. (Footnote 44). He was born before 1360.
In 1375 John of Muntham conveyed the manor of Muntham to William Marlott, father of John's son-in-law, also William Marlott. The elder William died c. 1379 after settling Muntham on the younger William. (Footnote 83) From that William (d. 1400 × 1418) (Footnote 84) it descended from father to son through William (d. 1449 × 1464), Richard (d. 1484 × 1499), (Footnote 85) Thomas (fl. 1522), John (d. 1528), (Footnote 86) and John (d. 1552), to John Marlott (d. a minor 1554). Adam Mure
Adam Mure lived at Rowallan, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was born. Brice Claget on Medieval-L@rootsweb.com wrote: I know the received view is that, as Mr Williams stated, Elizabeth Mure, wife of Robert II, was daughter of Sir Adam Mure of Rowallan and his wife Jonet Mure, heiress of Polkellie. However, several years ago Andrew MacEwen (who is highly knowledgeable about these Scottish lines) told me that in fact Sir Adam Mure was of Polkellie, not Rowallan, and that his wife was Jonet Cunningham, widow of Hugh de Hutscom. Andrew said this is proved by a papal dispensation of 1322. I'm afraid I can't find the citation, if he gave me one.
I don't know what Andrew's view is of the purported Montgomery- Mure descent. The account at SP 3:421-427 suggests that the Montgomerys are pretty speculative down to c. 1360, and differs substantially from the account at ES III/4:640.
John Ravilious wrote: Actually, the Mure line (or at least the ancestry of Elizabeth
Mure) is something of a quagmire. Traditional lines have connected her to the Mures of Rowallan, but this is apparently not certain.
Andrew B. W. MacEwen has found that the dispensation for one Adam Mure and his wife Jean/Janet Cunningham (text in Andrew Stuart's history of the Stuarts) is the evidence for the marriage of her parents, but beyond that certainty has not been achieved.
James Paterson's "History of the County of Ayr (with a Genealogical Account of the Families of Ayrshire)" [2 vols, 18747-1852] is the best starting point, with use of George Robertson's "A Genealogical Account of the Principal Families of Ayrshire" likely of use. As I recall you'll find accounts for Mure of Rowallan and Mure of Polkelly: if you can find the right reconstruction of Elizabeth Mure's ancestry, it will require some original sources to validate/correct what Paterson and Robertson have to say.
