     Emma Melton and Kate Annie Cocksedge appeared on the 1911 census in Beyton Rd, Thurston. Emma Cocksedge aged 76 and Kate Cocksedge aged 45.

     William Mendlove made a will dated 13 August 1611 in Penistone, Yorkshire. Will and probate of William Mendlove of Honethwaite in the parish of Penistone, yeoman. He mentions Agnes his wife, Henry Mendlove his brother, Jaspar Mendlove his son and Elizabeth Mendlove his daughter and disposes of a cottage and lands in Greasbrooke and lands in Penistone and Thurlestone [largely illegible].
     William died after 13 August 1611. He was mentioned as the previous tenant in the manorial court roll in Penistone, YKS, dated 24 September 1621, in Penistone, YKS, . Copy surrender and admittance: Court baron of Godfrey Bosville, Manor of Penistone: Agnes Mendlove surrendered all her houses, buildings, lands etc. in Penistone and Thurleston and a moiety of all lands and tenements (which the said Agnes lately had by surender of William Mendlove and which were lately customary lands of William Jenkinson and Joanna his wife) to the use of said Agnes for life and after her death to William Peake alias Riche. He was admitted. Fine respited.

     Rhodri Mawr ap Merfyn was born before 844. He was the son of Merfyn Frych ap Gwriad and Esyllt ferch Cynan Dindaethwy.
     Rhodri Mawr ap Merfyn married Angharad ferch Meurig, daughter of Meurig ap Dyfnwallor (?). Stewart Baldwin states that - a fourteenth century manuscript) gives Angharad ferch Meurig as the wife of Rhodri Mawr, and is the earliest known source to mention Angharad. Patrick Sims-Williams has argued persuasively (in SW) that Angharad is a late invention, and I find his arguments convincing. (The main problem is that JC, the earliest source for this and other marriages, shows a disturbing tendancy to have suspiciously convenient sisters marrying just the right people, suggesting invention.) The same arguments apply to Rhodri's alleged mother Nest of Powys (below, #2049). Since Angharad probably never existed, the supposed line of descent from the kings of Ceredigion which has been traced through her is probably not valid.
     Rhodri died in 878 in Wales. Gwynedd was always the primary kingdom of Wales, even though it has moments when it was dominated by rulers from the south. It had several great rulers during its early years but the first to earn the title "the Great" was Rhodri ap Merfyn who by 871 had inherited Powys (855) and Seisyllwg, in addition to Gwynedd, and was effectively ruler of all northern and western Wales.
