     Admiral Henry Medley married Anne Goche, daughter of Nathaniel Goch and Dorothy Grimston, on 29 November 1713 in York Minster, York, Yorkshire. Captaine Henry Medley and Mrs Anne Gouhe.
     He was Governor of Newfoundland & Labrador 1739-1740. He entered the Royal Navy in 1703, and was promoted through service on many ships throughout his career in the Baltic and Mediterranean seas, including the Poole, York and Leopard. In 1739, he was appointed Governor of Newfoundland and served for two seasons. In 1744, he was promoted Rear-admiral of the White, in 1745 he became Vice-admiral and Commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean. In July 1747, he was promoted to Vice-admiral of the Red but died, likely in ignorance of the advancement, on August 5^th, 1747 on board the Russell at Vado.
     Admiral Henry Medley made a will dated 2 August 1747 in Savona, Italy. Henry Medley, of Little Smeaton, co. York, esq , vice-admiral of the Blue Squadron of his Maties fleet, & commander-in-chief of his Maties ships & vessels imployed in the Mediterranean," desires to be buried in the parish church of St. Michael-le-Belfrey, York. He bequeaths £7,000 to his nephew John Kilvington, of Acomb, gent., £3,000 to his niece Mrs. Dorothy Kilvington, of York, and a like sum to Jane, daughter of the above John Kilvington. All his real estates he leaves to Thomas Grimston, esq., of Etton, and his heirs, remainder to his said nephew John Kilvington.
     Henry died on 5 August 1747 in Savona. A monument to his memory, in the north aisle of the choir of York Minster, bears the following inscription : In Memory of
The Honble. Henry Medley , Essq., Vice Admiral of the Blue and Commander in Chief in the Mediterranean, who died at Savona Aug: 5th., 1747: He was son to Robert Medley, Esqr., by Dorothy daughter to William Grimston of Grimston Garth, Esqr. He married Ann daughter and heiress to Mr Nathaniel Goche, merchant in Hull, by Dorothy sister to Thomas Grimston, Esq., Grandson to the abovenamed William ; and had issue by her one daughter who died young.

     Alfred Meekins or Makins was born on 9 September 1825 in Hessett, Suffolk. He was the son of Henry & Mary Makins, labourer. They may be the Henry Makins & Mary Waylett who married at Tostock 16 Sep 1823, however in a likely brother's baptism in 1832, Mary is 'late Peas'. He was christened on 16 October 1825 in Hessett.
     Alfred Meekins or Makins married Susan Austin, daughter of John Austin and Ann Bullett, in October 1849 in Hessett, Stow RD, Suffolk. He appears to have settled on the spelling Meekins.

     I have been looking for my mother's family for years and just since the dawn of home computers and the Internet finally found some of her cousins. But, after all of us combined notes and family stories, we still could not get back any farther than the great grandmother generation. Fairly recently I discovered that one reason for that was that my great grandmother's (Sarah Ann Meekins Doylend) mother died while Sarah and her brother Tom MEEKINS were very small and her father had remarried. Since Sarah couldn't have known her mother well, that seemed to stop the stories on her side. Through the computer I have pieced together some of it (guessing and not documented -- just so you know, but it does seem a good guess and fit). I hope you can find your way through this manner of listing. I didn't think it would scan clearly, but typing it out makes it look confusing, too.       Ellen Meenagh was also known as Minagh in some records. The name is found mostly in co. Tyrone. She was born circa 1820 in Ireland. The name Meenagh is common in Termonmaguirk in the 1901 census and there is an Annie in Sultan townland. In the Griffith Valuation of Ireland the name is recorded as Minagh. Meenaghs are to be found in the parishes of Arboe, Ematris, Clonfeacle, Drumglass, Tullylish, Bovevah, Carrickfergus, Derryloran, Holywood and possibly Aghagallon (Meenaght). There are Meenans in Termonmaguirk.
     Ellen Meenagh married Charles Hagan before 1837.
     Ellen died. In Tully.... parish, Cookstown Union, Registration district of Coagh, Tyrone: an Ellen Hagan died 31 March 1865, aged 88, married, housewife, of senile decay. The informant was Jane Hagan of same.
