John MacCraith

     John MacCraith was born circa 1854 in Cork, Ireland. He was the son of Michael George McCraith & Elizabeth Beazley. He arrived in Melbourne 15 June 1856 aged 1 per the "Atlanta" from Liverpool departing 27 March 1856. In May 1882 he was the Station Master at Berwick (Elizabeth Birth Cert), by August 1882 he was Station Master at Riddles Creek (Illuminated Address, property of Mr Gerald McCraith).
     John MacCraith married Ellen McKee Annie Dunbar, daughter of George Killigrew Dunbar and Anne Potter Watt, on 25 January 1880 in the Roman Catholic church presbytery, Elsternwick, Victoria. Her husband stated that he was aged 24 at marriage, as Ellen was only 16 he probably lowered his age. Both were of Dandenong at their marriage, he was described as a station master. John MacCraith was listed in a directory dated between 1895 and 1897 at 87 Ireland Street, West Melbourne, Victoria. He was listed in a directory dated between 1896 and 1899 at 685 Spencer Street, West Melbourne, Victoria. Was a commercial traveller (Birth Cert Eileen 1899), at his death in 1905 he was described a as a Traveller. He was listed in a directory dated 1900 as 1900, 01, 02 1905 not listed.
     Family owned Waverley Hotel, renamed Astoria Hoter; Corner Flinders Lane and Collins Place. Demolished 1972 Said to be a very handsome man, a fine singer and a good entertainer. He was listed in a directory dated 1903 at 104 Miller Street, West Melbourne, Victoria.
     John died on 19 November 1905 in St Vincent's Hospital, Fitroy, Victoria. He was killed in an explosion after taking a candle to investigate a gas leak behind hotel at 50 Collins St. Inquest 21 & 24 November 1905. Verdict - accidental death. He was described as a "traveller" at death, 50 years in colony. He was buried on 21 November 1905 in Melbourne General cemetery.

     John Andrew MacCraith was commonly known as Jack. He was born on 12 November 1916 in Kensington, Victoria. He was the son of Michael George MacCraith and May Mary Malcolm.
     John was educated in Keilor Rd State School, West Melbourne.
     John Andrew MacCraith married Aimee Small on 7 October 1939 in Essendon, Victoria. An unknown person was a company director. At 14, Started work at Noon Pies At 16, was foreman at Noon Pies At 17, left to start his own business, Catching and selling rabbits to butchers. He has been catching rabbits for years, and was making more money off the rabbits than he was at Noon Pies.

During the Second World War served as a Aircraft spotter at Albany W.A., whilst her husband Oscar, was stationed at the RAAF base. She was born on 1 May 1911 in Hotham West, Victoria. She was the daughter of Michael George MacCraith and May Mary Malcolm.
     May was educated. St Kilda Rd State School; College of Domestic Arts (Emily McPherson College).
     May Mary MacCraith married Oscar Emmerson Blyth in 1940 in Victoria.

Michael George MacCraith

(6 January 1880 - 29 July 1944)
     Michael George MacCraith was commonly known as Mert. He was born on 6 January 1880 in Broadmeadows, Victoria. He was baptised at Dandenong by Rev Father Quilien. He was the son of John MacCraith and Ellen McKee Annie Dunbar. Michael was a printer. At his marriage in 1906 he was a printer and on his son Gerald's marriage in 1930. He was a Foreman Printer at Sands McDougall 1944 Munitions Worker according to his death certificate.
     Michael George MacCraith married May Mary Malcolm on 15 January 1906 in St John's, Melbourne?, Victoria.
     Their son Michael G is listed from 1907 at 110 Dryburgh St Nth Melbourne; 1910 ditto (no G).. Michael George MacCraith was listed in a directory dated 1919 as Mr Michael McCraith, at Stationmaster, Dimboola, Victoria. 1921 (no G) station master Fishermens Bend Port Melbourne; 1925 Michael station master Mitchell St Bendigo; 1929 Michael station master Mitchell St Bendigo.. He was listed in a directory dated 1921 as Mr Michael McCraith, stationmstr at Fishermens Bend, Port Melbourne. He was listed in a directory dated 1923 as Mr Michael G McCraith at 8 Percy Street, Kensington. He was listed in a directory dated between 1925 and 1932 as Mr Michael G McCraith at 8 Cooper Street, Essendon.
     Michael died of congestive cardiac failure on 29 July 1944 in St Vincent's Hospital, Carlton, Victoria, aged 64. He died as a result of a motor car accident, which crushed his chest, he lived 9-10 days after the accident. He also was suffering from pneumonia and lung cancer when he died, according to May Blyth he was only skin and bones when he died. He was cremated on 31 July 1944 in Fawkner Crematorium.

     Joseph MacCulloch arrived per "Ellen Stuart" on 7 December 1858 at Victoria from Jos McCullogh 24 & Mary Ann McCullogh 26 were unassisted passengers.
     On 18 Sep 1863 Joseph McCulloch had an unclaimed letter at Yackandandah advertised in the Government gazette.
     Joseph MacCulloch married Jane MacPherson, daughter of Paul MacPherson and Jane Emslie, in 1867 in Victoria, Australia.
     Joseph MacCulloch made a will dated 23 April 1915. Joseph McCulloch, retired farmer of Carisbrook appoints his sons Joseph, Robert & John as executors and mentions his other children giving George, Margaret Glazeur, Jessie Moss & Rebecca Green £25. He gives his wife Jane an annuity of £50, after these legacies he bequaths the whole of his estate to his sons John, William & Alexander as tenants in common.
     Joseph died on 23 July 1915 in Carisbrook, Victoria, aged 81. He was buried in the cemetery, Carisbrook. Memorial inscription: In memory of Joseph McCulloch, and also – his wife Jane.
     His will was proved on 17 September 1915 in Victoria. Probate was granted to Robert McCulloch, of Mildura, railway employee; Robert McCulloch of Caulfield, gentleman and John McCullock of Carisbrook, farmer, executors.
