     In 1871 a New South Wales mining adventurer, C S McGlew, tracked down the origins of a small sample of tin that had been brought to Sydney by a commercial traveller, and passed from hand to hand. He found that the sample had been sent on its way by an eccentric shepherd on the New England tableland. McGlew started a rush to the rich tinlands of the region. This alluvial tin could be mined like gold by men with little capital and experience, so its development was rapid. In 1872, following up another rumour, McGlew found another rich tinfield just across the Queensland border, and in 1873 the Border tin region produced more tin than any other region or country in the world. He was listed in a directory dated between 1875 and 1876 as Cornelius S McGlew at Newtown Rd, Newtown, Sydney, New South Wales.

There is an interesting petition in 1817 where paperstainers objected to stencillers as they didn't need premises and didn't pay duty, so were undercutting them.
