With his brother George was sugar merchant in Barbados, married well and retired to Northallerton. He purchased the old mansion of Gawthorpe Hall, which stood at the north-east corner of the present lake at Harewood in 1738/9. He may have married twice.

With his brother George was sugar merchant in Barbados, married well and retired to Northallerton. He purchased the old mansion of Gawthorpe Hall, which stood at the north-east corner of the present lake at Harewood in 1738/9. He may have married twice.
