He was rector of Hooton Roberts: in a transcript of his return for Archbishop Herring's visitation in June 1743 he stated there were 33 families in parish, resided in parsonage house for 27 years, assists a neighbouring relation [his nephew Rev William Steer of Swinton & Wath] who has been very ill.
