Robert Fellowes Hunt was born on 30 June 1830 in London, England. He was the son of Henry Leigh Hunt and his wife Ellen.
Robert Fellowes Hunt married Mary Paul, daughter of John Paul and Mary Bowen, on 25 November 1860 in St Leonards, New South Wales, Australia. Robert was the third deputy Mint master at Sydney. There are 22 documents at the Powerhouse Museum c. 1860-1892 relating to his employment along with a medal awarded to him as an exhibitor at the London International Exhibition, in 1862.
In 1877 Robert Hunt was appointed Deputy Master of the Sydney Mint, a position in which he remained until his death in 1892. Although in charge of the Royal Mint, Sydney Branch, he was deputy to the Master of the Royal Mint in London. Hunt had already worked at the Sydney Mint between 1853 and 1870 as Chief Clerk in the Bullion Office and then at the end of 1870 went to the newly-opened Melbourne Mint as Superintendent of the Bullion Office for seven years.
Hunt was a keen educationalist and this medal (together with the 1879) demonstrates his willingness to participate in exhibition development - in the 1862 NSW displays for London 'for services', and in the 1879 as an 'Honorary member of the Commission'. For the 1879 event Hunt organised a display of alluvial gold samples, coins and an automatic balance from the Sydney Mint between 1877 and 1892. Robert was a pioneer photographer. Frederich Albert Huppatz married Mary May Colbert, daughter of Thomas Colbert and Maria Malone, on 18 September 1906 in St Mary Hotel, St Mary, South Australia. The hotel was the residence of the bride's mother. Her stepfather, Mr George Young was licensee of the Hotel from 1903 to 1918.
Frederich died on 7 July 1947 in Saddleworth, South Australia, aged 66. He was buried in the Catholic cemetery, Saddleworth.
