[from Scope and Content] Herbert Ross Hooper and James Brereton Hooper paid £2,000 of the consideration of £7,000 in Add Mss 5399, it being intended that they should mortgage the property to the vendor to secure the remaining £5,000. The conveyance [Add Mss 5399] was therefore prepared and executed, 'but as an escrow pending the payment of the £5000 on the execution of the mortgage', said H.R. Hooper and J.B. Hooper recently purchased some freehold property in Shoreham for £1,350 and said J.B. Hooper applied to Rev. R[obert] P[oole] Hooper (his father) and C[harles] R[obert] Rivington to lend the £1,350 and £5,000 from certain funds of which they were trustees with him, and this they agreed to do upon having the consent in writing of all the beneficiaries under the trust; the former sum was advanced upon the title deeds being deposited with the trust papers, and the latter sum was to have been provided as soon as H.R. Hooper and J.B. Hooper had executed the mortgage. Before this was prepared J.B. Hooper fell ill and a receiver of his estate appointed, 'and it has transpired that H.R. Hooper & James B. Hooper entered into these transactions as Trustees for themselves and their seven brothers and sisters but there is nothing in writing defining the terms of the trust or the powers of the Trustees'. The brothers and sisters desire that Henry Brereton Hooper (the receiver of J.B. Hooper's estate) be appointed trustee and that the trustees should have wide powers of dealing with the freehold by sale or otherwise, including power to raise money by mortgage to pay off the £5,000 and to develop the Shoreham property

'We are aware that is so doing you will be exceeding your powers as Trustees but the purchase was made for the joint benefit of all of us and of our brother James Brereton Hooper and it is important in our interests that the money should now be paid and we undertake to the extent of our several interests to indemnify you from all the consequences of complying with this request'.
     Elise Annie Grosholtz married secondly Rev George Brereton Hooper on 14 April 1915 in St Andrew, Fulham. He was aged 64, widower, of Camborne, clerk in Holy Orders, she was aged 28, a spinster of 23 Palliser Rd, daughter of Matthias August Edward Grosholtz, architect.

1864. Letter from Mrs. Martha A. E. Philpotts in Goochland County, Virginia on behalf of Mrs. Caroline Keeling who
apparently committed a crime in Alabama while travelling for her health. Mrs. Philpotts offered to procure evidence of Mrs Keeling's insanity in order to aid Hooper, her lawyer. George was a lawyer. He was a member of the Bar of Columbus, Georgia, for a time chancellor of the east division of Alabama, and one of the best known supreme court and chancery lawyers of the state.
He taught school in Wilmington and Charleston, studied law in Wilmington, and began practice in Alabama in 1833. The letters show that he lived successively in LaFayette, Alabama; Columbus, Georgia; and Crawford and Opelika, Alabama.

He requested that his grandson did not enter the army or navy or any occupation requiring them to go the East or West Indies or any other hot or unhealthy climate. If his daughters were to become Catholics they were to lose their income.
     George died on 15 June 1863 in Brighton aged 83. He was buried on 23 June 1863 in the side chapel of St Mary le Haura, New Shoreham, Sussex.
     His will was proved on 9 July 1863 in the Principal Probate Registry, London. His effects were under £35,000. George Henry Hooper late of of 5 Regency Square, Brighton, Ssx who died 15 June 1863. The executor was Reverend Joseph Maude of Chirk, Denbighshire and the Rev Robert Poole Hooper of 29 Cambridge Rd, Brighton the son. The trustees of his estate sold his property at Peacock Hill.

     George W. and his brother Charles joined volunteer companies of the Confederate Army at the beginning of the War for Southern Independence. George went into the battle of Seven Pines, as Captain in the 6th Alabama Regiment, was shot in the side, had the bones of both legs broken and lost the use of his right hand. He was highly complimented by Gen. Rhodes for his courage and ability and received promotion as Lieutenant Colonel for that day's fight. ' He was then about twenty years old and this was his only battle, but he afterwards performed for the Confederate States Army, several commissions such as were possible to a cripple. After the war he was Prosecuting Attorney for Russell county, Alabama, was a successful lawyer.
