     James Heatherly was born on 17 November 1737 in London. He was the son of Seawell Heatherly and Hester or Esther Beesly. James Heatherly was christened on 24 November 1737 in Christ Church, Newgate St, (Greyfriars).
     He is probably the Jemmy Heatherly who subscribed to 2 volumes of the History of St Pauls in 1741.

Term 61 years; rent £14.
     In John Heatherly's will dated 24 November 1813 in Willingdon, Sussex,, John Heatherly was named as executor of the estate. He was an executor of John Heatherly's estate on 2 January 1815 in Lewes Archdeaconry, Sussex.
     John Heatherly lived at Sea Houses/Marine Parade, Eastbourne, Sussex, 1817. David Simkin wrote: By 1817, the Library on Eastbourne's seafront was in the hands of John Heatherly (1774-1839), the son of a milliner and haberdasher of Eastbourne.
John Heatherly was a bookseller and bookbinder by trade with a shop in Church Street. When he acquired The Library, Heatherly developed the Lounge into a Reading Room. The Reading Room was supplied with periodicals and daily newspapers which "arrive the same day by coach." Heatherly also added a Billiard Room and provided 'Apartments', consisting of 3 sitting rooms and 11 bedrooms, to accommodate visitors to Eastbourne.
In 1819, John Heatherly published " A description of East-Bourne and its Environs". In this early guide book, Heatherly gives an account of what The Library had to offer local residents and visitors to Eastbourne :
" ... a good library kept by Heatherly with an excellent lodging-house over it having the accommodation of the daily papers and periodical publications. The Library itself is a very spacious apartment, and for a small sum the subscriber has the benefit and amusement of reading as well as the room to lounge in if thought proper. This is a great accommodation to those who prefer lodging at a distance from the sea, yet wish occasionally to contemplate the grandeur of that element. In the adjoining room is an excellent billiard table kept quite select for the use of gentlemen only."
After John Heatherly died in 1839, The Library was run first by his widow and then by his three nieces - Ann, Caroline and Georgiana Lay - who were known as "The Three Misses Lay".

The Lay sisters operated The Library until about 1845.
Around 1845, the "Three Misses Lay" were succeeded by another trio of sisters - Elizabeth Hopkins (born 1815, Newington, Surrey), Marian Hopkins (born 1821, Newington, Surrey) and Emma Hopkins (born 1824, Newington, Surrey). A younger sister Georgina Harriot Hopkins (born 1832, Newington, Surrey) worked as an assistant in the shop.
The Library passed to Frederick Hopkins in 1857 and finally to Thomas Stafford Gowland in 1862.
     By 1817 the library was run by John Heatherly, remarkable for his black suit, knee breeches, silk stockings and powdered hair.
In his guidebook of 1819, A description of Eastbourne and its environs, he describes it as ‘a good library, delightfully situated facing the sea, with one of the best lodging houses above, daily papers each day and periodical publications. The Library is very spacious, and in the adjoining room is an excellent Billiard Table kept quite select for the use of gentlemen only.’
Heatherly ran the library and a shop until his death in 1839, and his widow and nieces, the Misses Lay, continued to 1845 after which the Misses Hopkins kept the shop for another 12 years.

     John Heatherly made a will dated 25 May 1830. His will mentions his wife Mary, his nephew Arnold Denman of Willingdon, his half brothers - James Lay of South Moulton St, Middlesex, Thomas Lay deceased & William Lay deceased, his half nephews and half nieces - the children of James Lay - Ann, Caroline, Henry, Louisa, the wife of James Hunt of Upper York St, Bryanstown Square, Mdx, Georgiana; the children of Thomas Lay - Matilda Ann, William Henry; the children of William Lay, Frances Heatherley, wife of Arnold Denman, Mary Ann; the only children of my sister Ann Denman, widow - Mary Ann Dempster, the wife of Robert Dempster of Willingdon, Louisa Denman; executors - Arnold Denman, Mary Heatherley, James Lay; witnesses - William Head of Eastbourne, baker, John Head of Eastbourne, baker, Samuel Putland of Eastbourne, shoemaker.
     John Heatherly was mentioned in the manorial court roll dated 11 November 1831 Court Roll dated 11 Nov 1831: Of the Manor of Eastbourne Nether Inn of a Court Baron of George Henry, Earl of Burlington, and Davies Gilbert, esq., lords of the said manor, of the Admission of THOMAS JAMES BREEDS as devisee in trust under the will of ABRAHAM WOOD dated 6 June, 1829 and proved at Lewes, 2 Dec., 1829, to a piece of ground lying behind the messuage, tenement or lodging house late of the said Abraham Wood at the Sea houses in Eastbourne containing from N. to S. at the W. end 43 ft. 3 in. and at the E. end 39 ft. 6 in. and from E. to W. at the N. end 41 ft. 9 in. and at the S. end 40 ft., abutting to the said messuage, E., to a piece of ground of James Thorncroft, S., to a new carriage road W., and to a piece of ground of John Heatherley, N; rent 2d by apportionment, of which premises Abraham Wood senr., who survived his wife Sarah Wood, died seised. He was listed in a directory dated 1839 as John Heatherly, at Church St & Sea Houses, Eastbourne. He was listed under Libraries: with the note that he was also a bookseller with reading & billiard rooms.
     John's death was registered in the quarter ending before 20 December 1839 in Eastbourne SD, Sussex. He was buried on 20 December 1839 in Eastbourne.

The will was dated 19 April 1781: A John Heatherly of Saint Mary, Rotherhithe, Surrey, a carpenter & joiner made a will dated 19 June 1781. He mentions his son John and daughers Mary & Sarah both of the parish of Saint Mary, Rotherhithe, his son George and daughter Ann R.... who he appoints sole executrix.

     Robert Heatherly was born on 13 November 1736 in London, England. This connection is only assumed because he should have been born before Feb 1736 and the lack of other evidence. He was the son of Seawell Heatherly and Hester or Esther Beesly. Robert Heatherly was christened on 26 November 1736 in Christ Church, Newgate St, (Greyfriars), London.
     He is probably the Bobby Heatherly who subscribed to 2 volumes of the History of St Pauls in 1741 along with Betsy, Jemmy & Jacky Heatherly.
     Robert Heatherly, son of the Reverend Mr Heatherly, late minister of Clavering in Essex, formerly Master of the School in Christ's Hospital, London, aged 23 years, was an out-patient of St Bartholomew's Hospital for the King's-Evil, had the second joint of his thumb so affected, that the bone was digested cout, and many other sores healed up and seemed cured; not long after, the disorder fell into both his eyes, with some small unbroken tumors in the neck and under both ears, and had been blind some months. He came to me with both his eyes covered; has been well some years, and is now in the Excise. I gave this man a Root as usual, and ordered him a gentle purge of half manna and half syrup of roses in think milk, once a week for three months, and to leave off all covering of his eyes, and wash them often with cold spring water, and dropping it into the eyes, this restored him perfectly to his sight.

The will of Robert Heatherly, gentleman, mentions his grandson Arnold Denman who received his silver watch, his wife Ann Heatherly, his son in law James Lay of Oxford St Middlesex, hatter & hosier £300, his daughter Ann Denman wife of John Denman of Willingdon yeoman, £500, Bowes? John, Matilda & William Lay the three children of my late son in law Thomas Lay deceased £30 each, my son John Heatherly all the residue, property in Eastbourne... It was witnessed by James Vine, butcher of Willingdon, William Smith, taylor of Willingdon & William Thomas, blacksmith of Willingdon.

      Seawell Heatherly was also known as Heatherley in some records. He was born before May 1699 in London. He was the son of William Heatherly.
     Seawell studied at Pembroke College, Cambridge University, from 1718 to 1722. He was admitted sizar (aged 19) at Pembroke on 13 May 1718. Son of William, of London, citizen and carpenter. He matriculated in 1717, Grecian, from Christ's Hospital. He gained a BA in 1721/2 and MA in 1725. Seawell was ordained a deacon at Norwich, Norfolk, in February 1721/22. Seawell was a teacher from 1725 to 1753, Christ's Hospital School, London. He was appointed an Under master at Christ's Hospital (Blue Coat School) in 1725, Upper Grammar Master in 1737, becoming the Headmaster from 1738-1753.
He was a student and exhibitioner there in 1718.
     Seawell Heatherly married Hester or Esther Beesly in 1727 in London. Seawell was widowed before 25 February 1737/38 in Christ Church, Newgate St, (Greyfriars), London, on the death of his wife Hester or Esther Beesly.
     Seawell Heatherly married secondly Elizabeth Unknown (Compton) on 20 July 1746 in St Katherine by the Tower, London.
     The Monthly chronologer, or London magazine, or, Gentleman's monthly intelligencery 22 (Jul 1753) p. 337 reported: Tuesday 12: Was held a general court of the governors of Christ's Hospital, for the election of an upper master of the Grammar School, in the room of Rev Mr Heatherly, preferred to the vicarage of Clavering cum Langley in the county of Essex; when the Rev Mr Townley, of the masters of the Merchant-Taylors school, was chosen by a great majority. Seawell was vicar at Clavering, Essex, from 1753. His name on the honour board in the church is spelled Seawell Heatherley. He was succeeded by James Penn in 1763.
