John Killeen Handy was born in 1834 in Westmeath, Ireland. He was the son of Patrick Handy and Catharine Killeen. John was a clergyman at San Francisco, California, USA, from 28 March 1857. He received tonsure and minor orders on 22 Dec 1855 from the Archbishop of Paris and then sub-deaconate there 17 March 1856. He was ordained priest on 28 March 1857 by the Bishop of San Francisco., but left the church and became a member of the Church of England in Jan 1863 and marrida month later. He was described as clergyman, parliamentarian and barrister.
In March 1862, Rev John Killeen Handy (1834-1874) arrived in Tamworth, appointed by Archbishop Polding to be Pastor of the Liverpool Plains and first resident priest at ST Nicholas. He established a school along American lines. He left for Sydney in November.

He had been member for Brisbane in the Qld parliament and Crown Prosecutor for the Northern District when the Palmer ministry fell. Bishop Quinn & Father James Horan reconciled him on his death bed and absolved him from censure.
His will was proved on 26 February 1874 in Brisbane, Queensland. In the will of John Killeen Handy, late of Brisbane, Barrister-at Law, deceased. Probate was granted to Elizabeth Carse

John Wesley preached in Jonathan Handy's house on Friday evening, 2 April 1748. At a meeting at Tyrrellspass (also County Westmeath) three days later (5 April), John Wesley indicated that Handy, "greatly sorrowing before, was now enabled to rejoice in God. . ." Charles Wesley preached at Jonathan Handy's house at Templemacateer on 9 February 1748.

The progenitor of this family came over to Ireland as a Lieutenant in Cromwell's army. He did not obtain a grant of arms. The estate of Bracca Castle and other property was purchased by some of the family. Lt. Handy married and left a son, who married Joan Low, by whom he had issue three sons, the youngest being Samuel.
