     Rev John Gustavus Handcock was born in 1799 at Roscommon, Ireland. He was the son of Richard Handcock 2nd Baron Castlemaine and Ann French. Rev John Gustavus Handcock, George Handcock and Lt Col. Henry Robert Handcock was mentioned in a deed dated 19 April 1811 at Athlone. Richard Handcock of Athlone mentions his third, fourth & fifth sons John Gustavus aged 13, Geroge aged 8 and Henry Robert aged 4 in a renewal of lease. Rev John Gustavus Handcock matriculated on 1 November 1813 at Trinity College, Dublin, John Gustavus Handcock, Pensioner (Dr Burrows), son of Richard, publicanus; born Roscommon. He graduated in 1818 from Dublin with a Bachelor of Arts. John was a clergyman - Rector of Annaduff from 1831. He took his degree in 1819 then spent his time in seclusion at Moydrum Castle, reading, until his ordination by the Bishop of Kildare 26 April 1822 and was appointed by the Bishop of Meath on 2 May 1822 tot he perpetual curacy of Benown. In Nov 1823 he was presented to the rectory and vicarage of Tashinny and Abbeyshrue, one of the smallest livings in the diocese.
     Rev John Gustavus Handcock married Francis Flood Jessop on 13 November 1827 at Tishany, Longford. The Westmeath Journal reported the marriage: On Tuesday, the 13th inst. at Tishany Church, the Rev. John Gustavus Handcock, Rector and Vicar of Tishany, and of Abbeyshrule, son of Richard Handcock of Athlone, Esq. and nephew of Viscount Castlemaine, to Frances Flood Jessop, eldest daughter of the late John Harword Jessop, Esq. of Doory Hall, in the County of Longford, and grand-daughter of the late Sir Frederick Flood, Bart.
     They had six children, 3 sons & 3 daughters the eldest being aged 8 at his death.
     Rev John Gustavus Handcock made a will dated 28 February 1838.
     John died of typhus on 2 March 1838 at the Glebe, Annaduff, Leitrim, Ireland. There is an account of his life and work by his wife in "The Church of England magazine" available via Googlebooks along with a copy of an article on him in the Evening mail, March 1833/8. He was buried on 6 March 1838 at Athlone. Sacred to the memory of the Rev John Gustavus Handcock late Rector of the Parish of Annaduff Co. Leitrim. A faithful and devoted servant of the Lord Jesus Christ who having both by his life and doctrine adorned the Gospel of God his Saviour, was removed by death from his affectionate family and flock, in the prime of his days, and in the midst of his usefulness, March 2nd 1838 AEtat 39. This tablet was erected by his brothers in token of their love and affection for him.
     His will was proved on 24 March 1838 at the Prerogative Court of Armagh. His goods were valued at £1384, the executor being his wife Frances leaving all to his wife and children.

To my eldest son Timothy Handcock £800, to my daughter Sarah Handcock £700, to my son Jacob Handcock £700, to be disposed to the best advantage till each shall come of age. To my brothers John, Jacob, and Thomas Handcock £100 each. To my cousin William Richardson now living with me £50. To my cousin Richard Sparrow, eldest son of Alexander Sparrow of Castledermot, Co. Kildare, £50. To the poor of Lisburn Meeting £10, to the poor of Dublin Meeting £10. Executors and overseers "me well beloved father-in-law Timothy Forbes, my loving brother Thomas Handcock, both of this city." Witnesses: George Wilson, William Richardson.
     Joseph died before 27 November 1729 at Dublin, Ireland.
