Frederick died on 17 October 1965 aged 85. Obituary: Air Vice-Marshall F C Halahan. Air Vice-Marshall F C Halahan, CMG, CBE, DSO, MVO., who died on Saturday, was among the naval officers whose specialist knowledge and experience was utilized in the early days of the RAAF, of which he was an original member.
A former gunnery lieutenant, he became head of the gunnery section in the Admiralty Air Department in 1914-16 and commanded RNAS units at Dover and Dunkirk in 1916-18. Although too old for active service in the Second World War, he returned for special duty in a lower role.
Frederick Crosby Halahan was born on May 27 1880, the son of Colonel S H Halahan of Sydenham, Chiddingfold. He was educated at Dulwich at the Royal Naval School, Eltham, and in HMS Britannia, which he entered as a cadet in 1894. Two years later he joined the cruiser "Immortalite" on the China Station. He became a lieutenant from 1900, gaining early promotion and specialized in gunnery.
Among the ships of which he was gunnery officer was the famous battleship "Dreadnought", which he joined while still under construction in 1906.
Shortly after the 1914-18 War broke out Halahan, then a lieutenant-commander, was appointed for duty in the Air Department at the Admiralty. This changed the course of his career. In 1915 he was graded as wing-commander in the RNAS. He was twice mentioned in despatches, and soon appointed DSO and CMG. From the formation of the RAAF in 1918, he was graded as lieutenant colonel.
The following year he was made Deputy Director of Equipment (Quartermaster Services) at the Air Ministry, and a month later was granted a permanent RAF commission as group captain. In 1921 he was promoted to air commodore, and a year later became Director of Aeronautical Inspection. From 1924 he was Director of Technical Development, and for three years form 1926 he was Air Officer Commanding at Cranwell and Commandant of the RAF College. He retired in 1930 having held the rank of air vice-marshal form 1928. He was awarded the CBE in the birthday honours in 1923. A keen rifle and revolver shot, he was the principal founder of the RAF Rifle Association in 1921, and or some time was chairman of its executive committee. His name is perpetuated in the association's Halahan Challenge Cup.
During the Second World War he returned for special service in the rank of group captain, reverting to the retired list in 1944.
He married in 1905 Muriel, eldest daughter of James Grimble Groves, of Cheshire, and had two sons and one daughter. Their elder son was killed in 1941

In 1974 he was mentioned in a letter from Werner ott to Lord Mountbatten. Now to Commander or rather Captain Halahan RN ret. I think his initials are F.C. Of F for Frederick I am sure. After the war he was sent to Hongkong, which he did not like. Therefore he was prepared to accept the British Government's offer to be one of the volunteer farmers breaking the ground for the fertilisation of the high plain in Central Kenya. This met with a huge success, also for Halahan who came from a farming family in England. And I as one who grew up as a boy in the then German colony of East Africa, who has followed colonial history with great interest and who has had in 1962 and 1963 a chance to talk with the emerging new African leaders (most of whom are still in office) on the white man's achievement in Africa am willing to confirm that these large British farms were a magnificent achievement of a bunch of hard-working British experts. They all had become prosperous farmers when the end of the British Empire came and they felt deserted by the British Government in London. When I saw Halahan and his wife in November 1963 they were very pessimistic about the outlook. They doubted whether they could sell the farm and were thinking of going to South Africa. I have written three times in 1964 without any reaction, but I am sure that postal services were no longer up to standards and the Halahan farm was remotely situated on the slopes of Mount Elgin. "If the worst comes to the worst", said Halahan, "I have at least a naval captain's pension to fall back on". The Halahans had 2 boys about 10 and 11 years old in 63
Mountbatten responded:
I was also interested to hear about my old friend, Halahan, whom I haven’t seen for a long while and as he did not come to our 60th anniversary dinner of our Term which entered the Royal Naval College, Osborne, in May 1913, I rather fear be may not be alive
.
