Lt Cdr Robert Crosby Halahan was known as Bob. He was born on 5 April 1885 in Dulwich, Camberwell RD, Surrey. He was the son of Capt Samuel Handy Halahan and Hannah Croucher Engeham.
Robert was educated in Dulwich College, Surrey.
Robert served in the Royal Navy from 1901. Midshipman RN 30 Sep 1901, Sub Lt 30 Nov 1904, Lt 30 Nov 1905, HMS Bonaventure 1909, Lt Commander 30 Nov 1913. He joined the RN and became a submariner after training between 1906 and 1909. He lost his life along with all hands of HM Submarine E18 when it was lost in the Baltic. It appears that he qualified as a pilot on 24th December 1913 in a Bristol aircraft, certificate number 718 issued at Salisbury Plain.
I wonder, then, if he served with the RNAS whilst awaiting for his first command, Submarine D2, which was completed in the early days of the war at Barrow. See Wikipedia entry for HMS E18 for further details.

The whole time E18 was in the Baltic working with the Russian Fleet the commander of the British submarine E8, which was also there, kept a very detailed diary held by the Imperial War Museum. Robert was a very superstitious man, before E18 sailed on her last patrol he had his palm read, he was told he was in grave danger, from here he went to a British diplomats wife and said that if anything happens can she send a message to his wife before she received the official naval telegram, this wish carried out before the official admin date of 11-6-1916. My great grandfather for some unknown reason didn't sail on E18 that day and was replaced by the telegraphist from E8, my great grandfather became known as a good luck charm in which all the commanders wanted him on their subs, he had been with Robert Halahan from when E18 was being built and only missed this last patrol.
Lt Cdr Robert Crosby Halahan and Gwladys Mabel Gwatkin-Williams's marriage was registered in the quarter ending September 1907 in Cheltenham RD, Gloucestershire.
He received his aviator's certificate: Lieut. Robert Crosby Halahan, R.N. (Bristol Biplane, Bristol School, Salisbury Plain). Dec. 24th, 1913.
Robert died at sea circa 1 June 1916. His death was mentioned in a memorial in Chiddingfold, Sussex. His memorial in Chiddingfold church reads: On 23 May Lt Cdr Robert Halahan fired a torpedo which found the destroyer V100. The result was that the destroyer's bow was blown clean away; nevertheless, good seamanship enabled her to limp back to harbour. The next day E18 was lost without trace. It is presumed that she was lost to a mine. Lieutenant Commander Robert Crosbie Halahan, RN, is also commemorated on the Roll of Honour of Christ Church, in Cheltenham: Capt Henry Crosby Halahan

The Times on 17 August 1842 reported on the retreat from Cabul: We have been favoured with the following melancholy account of the death of the greater part of the officers of the 44th Regiment, previous to and during the disastrous retreat from Cabul. ... The account was dated 3 June ... Lieutenant and quartermaster Halahan has been wounded in the shoulder by a ball some time before leaving Cabul, but left it with the regiment; he was riding in the rear with Lt Dodgin as far as Jugdaluck, and there they advanced again at 8 o'clock p.m. I saw him with the remains of the corps after they had gone about two miles on the Jellalabad road. I saw his body lying, together with that of Lt Dodgin, on the snow on the road, partially covered with a cloak, which was saturated with blood, and was to all appearance dead.
A tablet has been erected in Alverstoke church, near Gosport to the memory of the officers and soldiers of the 44th Regiment who fell in the Afghan war. Over it are hung the colours of that ill fated regiments. The following is the inscription: - Sacred to the memory of ... Leiutenant and Quarter Master R R Halahan ...who fell upon the field of battle in the disastrous Affghan war of 1841 and 1842.
