George Ashby

     George Ashby was born before 1630. Note that the parish registers of St Philip are imperfect before 1757. A George Ashby was a mariner in 1660 sailing to Virginia and Barbados.
A John and a Thomas Ashby were sent to Barbados as indentured servants from Bristol in the 1660s. Also a William was sent to Virginia.

     George died before 11 July 1676 in St Phillip, Barbados.

Deed of George Ashby of St Philip signed 25 March 1687, entered 25 March 1693: George Ashby sold to his loving mother Deborah Hulton of St Philip, 4 negro slaves for £40. ... Deborah A Hulton, widow of the parish of St Philip, signed a deed of gift in which she bestowed the said 4 slaves to "my loving son, William Ashby". The slaves are to remain within her possession until her death, and then they are to go to Wm Ashby. The deed of gift was signed 25 March 1687 and proved 27 May 1693.

     George Ashby was mentioned in a deed dated 12 June 1689 in St Phillip, Barbados. Deed of George Ashby of St Philip signed 12 June 1689, entered 2 July 1689: George Ashby, blacksmith of St Philip, sold to John Frisell, a planter 20 acres with appurtenances, a dwelling house and appurtenances for £450. George Ashby also undertook within the 7 years and upon the reasonable request of John Frisell, his heirs, etc. to make such further deeds of conveyance in accordance with the law for the better conveying of the said bargained and sold premises. Witnessed by Christ. Webb & Robert Butler, proved 5 July 1689. George was a blacksmith, St Phillip.
     George Ashby and Deborah Unknown were mentioned in a deed dated 17 April 1690 in St Phillip, Barbados. Deed of George Ashby of St Philip, signed 17 April 1690, proved 20 March 1691: Deborah Hilton, a widow of the parish of St Philip, and the mother of George Ashby, made unto her said son all her estate by a deed of gift. In consideration of this fact, Geo Ashby undertook that she should be paid the annual sum of £12 during her life on Feb 1. Further George Ashby undertook that within a year of his mother's death that there should be paid to Elizabeth, Susannah & Deborah Peacock, the children of his (George Ashby's) sister, Deborah Peacock, the full sum of £50. For the better security of these payments, he had sold unto the said Deborah Hilton 5 negroes and 2 acres of land in the parish of St Philip bounding on the lands of the said George Ashby. Witnesses by Ambrose Niles & John Nusum.
     George Ashby married Dorothy T Nusum on 5 March 1692/93 in St Phillip, Barbados. Deed of George Ashby of St Philip signed 20 Feb 1692/3 proved 7 March 1692/3, entered 26 April 1693: George Ashby of the parish of St Philip, blacksmith & planter, for the real love, good will and affection which he had toward Dorothy Nusum, and in consideration of a marriage to be solemnised between them, sets about to make competent provision for her maintenance. He therefore for 5/- paid him by Thomas Laicy, a planter of Christ Church, granted him absolutely 6 acres of land in the parish of St Philip with all appurtenances and one "negro man", and that for no other purpose than for the use and benefit of Dorothy Nusum. Witnesses Jeffrey Battely, John Nusum.
     George died between 1698 and 1710. Possibly about 1710 - see John Ashby as exector re sale of slaves.
     His will was proved circa February 1710 in Barbados. Counter deeds of John Ashby - signed 6 Feb 1710 - judgement at Court of Common Pleas against John Ashby, clerk & Wm Bannister, executors of the will of George Ashby deceased, for the sum of £22, and in addition the charges upon which judgement had been issued under the Chief Judge. 2 negro slaves named Fan & Isaac belonging to John Ashby had been levied on. These slaves had been bought to market at Charles Town, alias Oistin's Bay, and had been bought by Christopher Bryon for £23 - that being the highest bid. ... proved 13 Feb 1710 [and] deed signed 9 Feb 1710, Christopher Bryan of St Philip sold to John Ashby of St Philip 2 negro slaves named Fan & Isaac for £23.

     In William Ashby's will dated 20 December 1750 in St Phillip, Barbados,, George Ashby was named as heir; Will of William Ashby signed 20 Dec 1750 O.S. (sic) Entered 8 Feb O.S. (1751) - wife Mary Ashby - one half of estate real and personal during widowhood. She is to stand one half of the debts and maintenance of his children in a decent and frugal manner. Son George Ashby - £50 at 21 and 3 negroes; son John £100 at 21; daughter Dorothy Ashby £150 at 18; son Cornelius £100 at 21; daughter Mary Hart Ashby £150 at 18 years; son William, the other half of his estate, real and personal, and paying just debts and legacies, when due, and the whole estate at the death or intermarriage. Executor & executrix: his son William Ashby and wife Mary Ashby. His wife to be the guardian of his children with friends, John Gittens and John Wilson as friends-in-trust. Witnessed by John Vodry.
     George died before 16 June 1759 in Christ Church, Barbados. He was buried on 16 June 1759 in Christ Church, Barbados. Another George Ashby was buried at St Philip March 17 1768. He was buried on 17 March 1768 in St Phillip, Barbados.
