     John died before 1871? In Birmingham. A John Evans aged 59 died March qtr of 1870 aged 59 (6d/33)and another aged 65, died in the June quarter of 1873 in the Birmingham registration district.

     He was a squatter from Whhitfield Station (59,520 acres) near Moyhu and employed Ned Kelly in 1874. After holding up the police station at Jerilderie, the Kely Gang discovered that the horses had Evans brand on them, and Ned Kelly, who felt that Evans was a decent squatter, was determined to return them. This was done by Evans had actually sold them to the police and he returned them to Jerilderie.
Born at Barfold, near Kyneton, John Evans was the fourth son of John and Elinor Evans, who migrated from Wales in about 1840. Evans had taken over Whtfield in 1853 and was less confrontational than his brother Evan, who had objected to Quinns owning Glenmore next to his own property after the death of James Lloyd in 1869. He had also employed Ned Kelly briefly. A ke3en horseman, John bred Buzzi, which won the Grand National Hurder in 1896 and again in 1897, and Valders, who won the race in 1899

A Border Mail article on 10 Sep 1927 said that Mr Evans was the "oldest continuing blood stock breeder in Australia". He was associated in a sheep grazing venture at Conoble Station near Hillston, a 320 acre property running 100,000 sheep in the ten years prior to a long series of droughts and the rabbit plague in 1888. His financial problems at that time led to the sale of the freehold land at 'Whitefield' in 1888, but he retained ownership of Redcamp in the Myrhee Valley and in the hills over-looking Hansonville.

The Whitefield Run was divided from the Myrhee Run in 1852 and was taken over by John Evan sin 1853. He called part of the Whitefield Run on Boggy Creek 'Redcamp' and when he sold the eastern portion of Whitefield in 1888 to Mr Hyem, the Boddy Creek valley and the easternpart of the Fifteen Mile Creek valley became known as the Redcamp Station. He also bought up other selectors in the aea.
     He took over the 'Whitefield' run of 76,000 acres from Wiliam Clark in 1853.
     John died from a shooting accident on 20 January 1861 in Hyem, Victoria, Australia. He was buried in Hyem.
