Ann Ellis was born on 26 August 1707 in Ireland. She was the sister of Wellbore Ellis, Baron Mendip. Her father was Welbore Ellis, Bishop of Meath. (Bishop of Kildare 1705, Meath 1731-33) whose wife was Diana, daughter of Sir John Briscoe of Amberley Castle, Sussex. Her male issue were to be heirs of her brother. As there was no issue of either of his marriages, he was succeeded by Anne's grandson Henry Welbore Agar, 2nd Viscount Clifden who assumed the additional surname of Ellis. She was christened on 15 September 1707 in St Mary, Dublin.
