The Gen-Medieval mailing list had a query from Christopher T. Smithson:
I am researching a Fairfax lineage that one of the descendants Eleanor Fairfax (b. 31 Jan 1631 in Menston) marries a George Smithson of Moulton, Yorkshire, England in 1653. Eleanor was the daughter of Col. Charles Fairfax of Menston born in Denton on 5 Mar 1597. He married Mary Breary daughter of John Breary of Scow Hall & Menston. Eleanor was a sister of Lord Fairfax of Cameron.
Col. Charles Fairfax was the son of Sir Robert Fairfax of Denton and Non Appleton born at Bilbro in 1560 and died 2 May 1640. He married Ellen Aske daughter of Robert Aske of Aughton and Elizabeth Dawnay, daughter of Sir John Dawnay. She died 28 Aug 1620.
Sir Robert Fairfax's father is Sir Thomas Fairfax of Denton & Nun Appleton (b. 1521; knighted in 1579 and died 28 Jan 1599. He married Dorothy Gale Rokely, widow who died 20 Jan 1596. She was a daughter of George Gale of York and Mary, daughter of Lord of Kendel.
Sir Thomas' parents were Sir William Fairfax of Steeton and Isabel Thwaits.
According to the information in Plantagenet Ancestry by Doug Richardson he has Ellen Aske marrying Gabriel Fairfax. Also I am showing an extra generation before getting to William and Isabel. Also I have Elizabeth Dawnay as Ellen Aske's mother.
My question is which is correct?
. Charles Fairfax (of Menston) was born on 5 March 1595/96. He was the seventh son (1595//6 or 1596/7?). He was uncle to the illegitimate Edward & Charles, and brother to Ferdinando. He was the son of Sir Thomas Fairfax (1st Baron) and Ellen Aske.
Charles Fairfax (of Menston) married Mary Brerehay (?). They had 14 children. A daughter Eleanor born 31 Jan 1631 in Menston married George Smithson of Moulton on 20 Jan 1653.
In his book Analecta Fairfaxiana, Charles Fairfax of Menston records (The Fairfax Correspondence, i, 314) a conversation he had in 1640 with 'my dear father, the first Thomas, Lord Fairfax... not many months before his death... He, walking in his great parlour at Denton I only then present, did seem much perplexed and troubled in his mind. But after a few hours broke out with these or the like expressions: 'Charles, I am thinking what will become of my family when I am gone. I have added a title to the heir male of my house, and shall leave a competent estate to support it. Ferdinando will keep it, and leave it to his son. But such is Tom's pride (led much by his wife) that he, not contented to live in our rank, will destroy his house'.
     He was Governor of Hull.
Charles died on 22 December 1673 aged 77.

Ferdinando, 2nd Lord Fairfax was General of the Northern Forces for the Parliament ... [other sources state that he was the father of Thomas not the brother - check]. He suffered a defeat at the otherwise successful Battle of Marston Moor though he was the first to send news of the victory to both Hull and London.
Ferdinando Fairfax 2nd Baron married Mary Sheffield. They had six daughters and two sons. Mary was the daughter of Edmund Sheffield, 1st Earl of Mulgrave. He was born on 29 March 1584 at Yorkshire. He was the son of Sir Thomas Fairfax (1st Baron) and Ellen Aske. He was educated at the Netherlands. In military matters.
Ferdinando Fairfax 2nd Baron was a member of the English parliament for Boroughbridge during the six parliaments which met between 1614 and 1629 and also during the Short Parliament of 1640 between 1614 and 1640.
In May 1640 he succeeded his father as Lord Fairfax, but being a Scottish peer he sat in the English House of Commons as one of the representatives of Yorkshire during the Long Parliament from 1640 until his death; he took the side of the parliament, but held moderate views and desired to maintain the peace.
In the first Scottish war Fairfax had commanded a regiment in the king's army; then on the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642 he became commander of the parliamentary forces in Yorkshire, with Newcastle as his opponent. Hostilities began after the repudiation of a treaty of neutrality entered into by Fairfax with the Royalists.
At first Fairfax met with no success. He was driven from York, where he was besieging the Royalists, to Selby; then in 1643 to Leeds; and after beating off an attack at that place he was totally defeated on 30 June 1643 at the Battle of Adwalton Moor. He escaped to Hull, which he successfully defended against Newcastle from 2 September until 11 October 1643, and by means of a brilliant sally caused the siege to be raised.
Fairfax was victorious at Selby on 11 April 1644, and joining the Scots, besieged York, after which he was present at the Battle of Marston Moor (2 July 1644), where he commanded the infantry and was routed. He was subsequently, in July 1644, made Governor of York and charged with the further reduction of the county. In December 1644 he took the town of Pontefract, but failed to secure the castle.
Fairfax resigned his command on the passing of the Self-denying Ordinance, but remained a member of the Committee for the Government of Yorkshire, and was appointed, on 24 July 1645, steward of the manor of Pontefract.
During his command in Yorkshire, Fairfax engaged in a paper war with Newcastle, and wrote The Answer of Ferdinando, Lord Fairfax, to a Declaration of William, Earl of Newcastle (1642; printed in Rushworth, pt. iii. vol. ii. p. 139); he also published A Letter from . . . Lord Fairfax to . . . Robert, Earl of Essex (1643), describing the victorious sally at Hull.
Ferdinando Fairfax 2nd Baron married Rhoda Chapman on 16 October 1646.
Ferdinando died on 14 March 1647/48 at Denton, Yorkshire, aged 63. In 1647 he had retired to the family home at Denton where he died of septicaemia caused by a foot infection the following year. He was buried at Bolton Percy, Yorkshire.
His will was proved on 11 October 1649. Will of The Right Honorable, Sir Ferdinando Fairfax or Lord Fairfax of Cameron of Denton, Yorkshire.
