Charles Agar Earl of Normanton was born on 22 December 1736 in Ireland. He was the third son according to his father Henry Agar MP's will on 1748, and younger brother of James, 1st Viscount Clifden. He was the son of Henry Agar and Ann Ellis. Charles Agar Earl of Normanton and Ann Ellis, James Agar (Viscount Clifden) and Welbore Ellis Agar were beneficiaries in Henry Agar's will proved 29 November 1746 in the Prerogative Court of Armagh.
Charles studied at Oxford University on 31 May 1755. He was educated at Westminster School. Charles was a Doctor of Divinity. He was made Dean of Kilmore, then Bishop of Cloyne between 1768 and 1779.
Charles Agar Earl of Normanton married Jane Benson on 22 November 1776. Charles was Archbishop of Cashel after 19 August 1779. His papers are held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. Charles was created Baron Somerton 1795, and Viscount Somerton and Earl of Normanton 1806 (Peerage of Ireland). He was elected one of the original 28 Representative Peers in 1800. Charles was Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland after 7 December 1801.
