Thomas Holden Bowker was born on 24 February 1807 in Dorset, England. He was the son of Miles Bowker and Anna Maria Mitford. Thomas Holden Bowker was christened on 4 October 1813 in Almer, Dorset.

A very costly and beautiful memorial has this week been placed in the chancel of St. Mary's Church, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire, to the memory of the above gentleman. The memorial was designed by W P Crisp Esq. architect, 88 Chancery-lane, London, and to say the least of it, displays an amount of art and architectural ability seldom shown on works of a similar nature. Mr. Crisp has clearly studied the motto of the Bowker family, viz:-attempt nothing you cannot perfect. When it is considered that Mr. Crisp has taken his design from different parts of the church, and moulded them into a beautiful whole, the credit is greater to him.
The memorial as a whole is a fit one to perpetuate the memory of so honoured a townsman as the deceased gentleman, and reflects the highest credit upon the surviving members of the family, and upon all in any way connected with it.
The following is a description of the memorial. It is composed of Caen stone and polished statuary, and Purbeck marbles, and the motive of its design has been sought in the beautiful architecture of the tower of the church itself. This we believe was a suggestion of one of the family, A glance at the south window of the tower and the window below it, will show that a combination of the recessed opening of the one, and the ornamented pinnacles of the other, forms the nucleus of the design. The carving is somewhat more elaborated to suit a position closer to the eye. The hood was adapted from the canopy in the west front of the tower. The battlements are also taken from the tower, and indeed every portion of the new work can be traced to some portion of the old. The inscription is in lead letters, on a slab of statuary marble, and is a follows:- "In loving memory of Thomas Bowker, for 67 years a resident in this parish wherein be held many offices of trust, and who was appointed a Justice of the Peace for the Isle of Ely in 1825, and a Deputy-Lieutenant for the County of Cambridge in 1852. Born, 8th. August 1791. Died, 10th. May 1882''
Over the inscription is a shield bearing the coat of arms, the crest and motto, the whole carved in high relief in statuary marble. The Arms: Quarterly 1st, and 4th. Argent, on a boss engrailed gules between three boar's heads, erect and erased proper across, or 2nd. or 3rd. or a chief gules. The crest: An arm embowed in armour fenways, couped at the shoulder, holding in the hand a bow-stringed proper. The motto; "Aut nunquam tentes aut perfice* (attempt nothing you cannot perfect)
Below the inscription slab is a carved cornice of Caen stone forming a shelf for floral decorations. The lower portion of the memorial is of polished Purbeck, following the form of the vestry doorway. In the recess is carved a riband, on which is given the text of the vicar's funeral sermon, "Thou shalt go to thy Fathers in peace, thou shall be buried in a good old age" Genesis xv., 16. The Purbeck marble corbels, bearing initials T.B., and built far into the chancel walls, support the whole memorial.
The memorial has been executed by Mr. F G Anstey, of Regent's Park, London, sculptor, from Mr. Crisp's drawing.
His will was proved on 19 June 1882 in the Principal Probate Registry. The will with 2 codicils of Thomas Bowker, late of Whittlesey, Cambs, esquire, who died 10 May 1882 at Whittlesey was proved by Catherine Bowker of Whittlesey, the daughter, and Thomas Bowker, of 1 Grays Inn Square, Mdx, gentleman, the son, the executors.
A letter from Marjorie Harrison dated 17 Dec 1990 states that she descends from Thomas Marshall, born in 1838, the illegitimate son of Eleanor Marshall. The local story was that he was the son of the Squire of Whittlesey (Thomas Bowker at the time when Eleanor worked at the manor house). His baptismal certificate gives Thomas Speechly as the father, but he didn't use his name..
